Those a some serious spears. I am going to have to look for some of those...

Makes me think about the British solders at Isandlwana.

Yep, dozens of black dudes with spears throwing spears in every direction sometimes.

I wouldn't want to get close or on the wrong side of the animal. Some of the spear throws are pretty wild and go anywhere.

The animals try to defend themselves but never push through to the spear throwers.

The cape buffalo ends up looking like a pin cushion.

Some of the antelope escape with a fair amount of blood on their hind quarters.

The choice of music is quite humerous, eg with the words "Hurry boy its waiting there for you ..... " as hundreds of black dudes come running down the hill through the forest.
And "wild dogs cry out in the night .... " as they show the "human" wild dogs on mass surrounding an elephant and spearing it. Quite appropriate wording.

What about the elephant. It plucks spears from its neck and head and tosses them away, until finally someone gets it in the eye. Even though it is speared in the side as well I don't see what the spears to the head are supposed to achieve. It is almost certainly shot when it drops.

I also found the music (Toto?) rather humerous.

And I too suspect the elephant with the spears in the head went down after a rifle shot.

All in all, I wonder how much of what is seen was done purely for the sake of the camera team for money?

is it just me or did you also notice that it appeared that they were shooting at the chopper.
There is no question that the elephant was felled by a rifle shot.

DT,

This film clip is from some old (1960s) Italian film. I don't remember the name at the moment though. Some of the footage is from non-hunting related tihngs such as the massgraves etc.

I would guess the guys firing at the helicopter are poachers. But then I suppose they could have been rebels too.

Watch that elephant kill again, they killed it with a spear. They are throwing at two targets. The eye and the base of the skull. Those spears are great heavy weapons with long long blades and they penetrated full length of the blade. As the elephant is moving around the haft flails around cutting and lacerating. When the kill spear come in you see the elephant stiffen and two more spears come in and the elephant topples. why would beleive other wise, thes people killed elephant for a long time before guns came on the scene. The only wild throws I saw were at the buffalo herd and even then that was destorted by the long lens. Misses yes, but wild I don't think so.

In Elaine Krige's book on the Zulu Culture she talks about hunting in this manner by the Zulu. The spear they used to hunt buffalo was great wide blade that was tossed at the back ham. Then as the animal ran the haft flopped around and drug and cut down through the ham and finally cutting the ham string.

The spear the Zulu's used for elephant had a blade about the size of a thumbnail and was poisoned.

The Zulu's had a great ritual in the hunt. With a hunt master. The Huntmaster determined who got the first hit and thus who either got a choice cut of meat or the whole animal.

Remember these guy didn't go to Westley Richards for a .450DR...they went to Sizwe the tool maker and got a blade and took it to Thula the spear maker. They use this method of hunting long before guns came on the scene. Their method of killing was not as efficient as ours but they got it done.

I'm not sure I have the cajones to take on a herd of buffalo, let alone an elephant with just a spear.

This link is supposed to download with English subtitles.

If you use the Google Video player is used to download the movie, there are no sub-titles.

Anyone know how to get them, with the Google Video player?

Perhaps a different link?
