Stainless steel double rifles
      #75587 - 05/04/07 03:38 AM

Gentlemen,

What do you think of stainless steel double rifles?

Who makes them?

Does anyone have any examples of double rifles constructed out of stainless steel?

Are there any problems inherent in stainless steel construction and special methods of manufacture required?

***

While not the normal steel used in the manufacture of double rifles, surely such DRs would be ideal for certain conditions, wet or very humid? Maybe an ideal DR for Alaskan or Siberian hunting of bears and other large beasts?

Please share your thoughts and even better any pics.

I started this thread out of interest as our member "Double Trouble" has just advertised a Fuchs stainless steel side by side for sale in the "Classified Advertisements" forum located here:

Fuchs .577 3 inch stainless steel double rifle

Also I have added the rifle to our Double Rifle Archive forum for future interest:

DR Archive forum - Fuchs .577 3 inch stainless steel double rifle

Both links contain full photos and description.

But here is one photo:

It is beautiful. But not $140,000 worth of beautiful in my humble opinion. I want guns to hunt with and the persuasion to choose S/S would be for gun that is going to be deployed in really harsh, cruddy, awful conditions... and $140K just does not seem pragmatic, to me. A S/S gun that I might use could really get mucked up, that is part of the reason to want a stainless steel gun.

But, indeed, it is a beautiful piece.

That is a grand looking Fuchs!

Several years ago Butch Searcy made a stainless steel plastic stock double, but nobody wanted to order one.

A stainless double sounds like a great idea for west/central African rainforest hunts. And I have to admit that a synthetic stock wouldn't be a bad idea either in such conditions. Although far from traditional...

As for the Fuchs, it's certainly a beautiful and highly unusual rifle.

Nice Fuchs stainless steel. Looks like the pictures were taken as a work in progress. I think it hasn’t been regulated yet as I can't see a notch in the rear sight. I hope the metal work comes out better than the picture especially for $140,000. I know how hard stainless steel is to work but for a un adorned rifle that seems like a lot of money.

DT,

Just out of curiousity, would it be possible to have the stainless metal coated (TiALN for example?) in order to make it dark/black/less shiny? And thus more traditional looking?

Erik:
I am not sure if coating stainless is possible but I would imagine that if we can coat Titanium, that there must a process for SS as well.

I will confirm with Fuchs when next I speak to him, which will hopefully be today.

DT,

TiALN is a coating I've been told works well on stainless. And does not chip etc like teflon and various other common coatings.

Thanks Erik, I will pass that info onto Fuchs if he is not already aware of it, I know that the coating we use on Ti is not really a coating rather it is a treatment of the surface to increase lubricity as Ti does has a strong cohesive property about it.

Well, hows that for timing, I just finished posting and then spoke to Fuchs.
He was not aware of the TiALN coating but did mention that if it required heat to apply that it would not be suitable for the barrels as they are soft soldered and the outcome of that would be obvious and certainly not desireable.

someone pionted out in an earlier post that the rear leaf sight had not yet been cut and, indeed, that photo was taken in advance of regulating but the gun has since been regulated.

I should mention that this gun was at SCI this year and that some of you may have even seen it as I did have several people handle it over the duration of the show.

Erik: I have to say that I could almost see Fuchs cringe at the mention of the carbon fibre stock lol

I think he (and most of us!) would cringe even more if such a beautiful wood stock as pictured eventually lost all it's finish and got moldy in the rainforest after being used as a canoe paddle!

As for the TiALN, I'm not sure if heat is used or not.

Erik

Coatings like TiAlN can be applied at low heat. The company Oerlikon Balzers coats cutting tools and drill bits with materials like that using low heat processes like "sputtering", and "cathodic arc discharge". Different materials and hence different colors are available. They also coat alot of engine parts.

Nice gun but stainless is best left for dish pans.
