How many round to 'shoot out' a 30-06?
      #75296 - 02/04/07 04:53 AM

Hey Guys;
I have a Whitworth Mauser actioned 30-06 that has been
mine for 30+ years. Some years I shot it a lot, some years
not so much. All totaled it probably has about 7-8,000
rounds through it. Never hot loads, never fired with the
barrel hot. Over the last year, the accuracy has gone to
hell. It always shot 1-1.5" groups, now it is getting worse
every time I shoot it and it's up to about a 3-4" group.
In the last few months I have re-bedded it to eliminate
that problem and changed scopes twice just in case my 30
year old Leupold was failing. Nothing I do seems to help.
How may rounds of 30-06 could you expect before the barrel
is done for? And I cannot tell by looking inside if it is
shot out.
Thanks
Raff

Raff
A 308 Sniper rifle barrel will usually give good accuracy for about 5000 rounds. Some go longer some do not.

I would say your 30-06 is shot out.

It sounds shot out.

7000 rounds is a lot.

Give the gun to someone who can
see the throat and or the rifling
in the barrel.

You might make sure there's no accumulation of fouling in the barrel.

Most rifles that are shot-out today, are fouled out, not shot out, or they are worn out by improper cleaning, using jointed rods, no action guides, etc. Yours, on the other hand, if indeed, has had 7 to 8 thousand rounds through it, the throat is probably well toasted.
: New barrels are not as expensive as buying a new rifle, if you do like it. Call or go to www.pac-nor.com. They can help and the gun could be more acurate than you could possibly imagine.

After making sure that the bore is really clean (basic stuff) It may be worth having an 1 1/2" cut off the muzzle and recrowning the barrelbefore changing it. Often the crown can be worn and accuracy can go to hell but can be restored this way. I don't know your barrel style but it might be possible to set it back a couple of threads and rechamber it to clean up the throat.

; Setting back and rechambering is usually good for another 1,000 rounds in a match rifle. This is normally done between 1,000 and 3,000 rounds. Since this barrel has seen more 'work' than that, you can probably rest assured it is toast for many inches forward of the chamber.
; Re-barreling is easy from pacnor and since this fellow lives in the States, he can buy a pre-fit and get one of the most accurate barrels made today - almost ready to screw on. Shilen or Brownell's can also provide a barrel and very reasonably- probably cheaper than setting back, rethreading and rechambering.

IMHO, it's time for a new barrel.
