New double rifle
      #75087 - 31/03/07 01:13 AM

Hey Folks:
I am the new kid on the block yet-I think this only post number 3. Anyway, I just picked up a new Kodiak IV in 45-70 two days ago.Been looking at them quite a while (a few years) & finally made the leap!It has not been to the range yet to find out what it is made of.I don't have any idea what to expect-am waiting on a reply from the factory on the regulating they used in it.Slugged it last night & found both barrels measure .456 x .451 with a .105 throat length.I am going to have to get a sizing die for it-don't have anything small enough & will probably design a mold for it as well.
I reckon that it will be a while before I find out what it will do--stay tuned,I will post about it when I find out.

Evidently, with the different sized barrels, you'll have to use the soft jacketed bullets made by Remmy. I don't know if you can get an accurate cast load without leading.

How can they send out "new" a double gun with such deviation in barrel sizes? It is 2007. I am not complaining. It is an objective question.

BigMike,

Congratulations on your purchase. I had one of those rifles and enjoyed it a lot until my buddy talked me out of it. Mine was regulated for the Remington factory 405 grain load, and it shot handloads that duplicated those ballistics. I got a box of 500 Remington bullets from Midway and let it rip!

Keep us informed on how it does.

And by the way, welcome to the forum. You will find lots of useful information here as well as lots of friendly folks from around the world.

Maybe I wasn't very clear about my new sxs bore dimensions--Both barrels have the same dimensions.
.456 dia. with the groves going .451 .Sorry for the confusion I caused some of you folks.

BigMike

How can a modern double be .456 when it is a 45-70
or is this normal in one of those - ie being slightly undersize.

How did you measure the bore ?

With a Micrometer or Caliper ?

The bore was measured by driving soft lead slugs through the bore, then you measure the slugs with a micrometer. Before you ask-yes,I repeated the measurements-4 times per barrel, only about 2 ten-thousandths(.0002")difference total. If this kind of dimension is surprising measure Marlin's cowboy rifles. All of mine are oversize by a surprising amount.

P.S.
I measured another like mine that was just over .455".

I have healed up enough to try the new Pedersoli a bit, finally. The jury is still out at this point as all that was tried was a 325 grain cast bullet sized to .457" (.456 Dia. barrels). It seems to have very good potential for accuracy at 50 yds with this bullet.I am trying to get something together to size down some jacketed bullets and see what I come up with.Stay tuned,I will update on it as the results are gotten.

I have been working with the new Pedersoli some more with cast bullets (don't have any jacketed stuff yet).I have tried 325 grain and 375 grain plain base and a 425 grain gas checked bullets so far. There is not a nickles worth of difference between the three at 50 yards.I will move on out to 100 & 150 yards the next time out.It regulates with all three at about 1750 to 1775 FPS with the 425 grain load being the best of the three-around an inch give or take to close to 2 inches for the lighter bullets-the heavier the better it seems. One thing I noticed was that the left barrel is consistently 8 to 15 FPS faster than the right barrel with the heavier bullets, and up to 25-30 FPS
Faster with the lighter ones (weighed powder charges).Probably why the heavier bullets group better I suspect.More results will follow as I get them.

Good to see you are shooting more Mike. And good to have you aboard. I was reading posts here for a while then decided to join. Then the evil began to take hold. Now I am the owner of a 412S O/U. You must now get your gun up and running to your satisfaction. Then the evil will creep in again, you will get bewitched and buy another double. Maybe a 9.3 or a 400-360. Who knows what evil will penetrate your heart? I hold these guys responsible for my O/U purchase. But I have been of late, contemplating a 450-400. Or maybe a 470 NE, or a 500NE, or .....................! RUSTY

I got back out to the range today to reconfirm my last findings, this time at 100 yards.I have hit pay dirt!! The load is 48.4 grs. of IMR 3031 with a WLR primer and a bullet of 425 grs./with gas check, a design that I drew up and had cut for me.At 100 yards it prints consistenly side-by-side
with a spread of 1/2 to 3/4 inch when I do my part out of 15 groups fired today.Considerably better than I expected. If the load crosses it will be farther out than I need to be shooting with a 45-70.
I noted that the range of velocity that it regulates at gets smaller as the bullet weight goes up but everything from 300 to 425 grs. regulates at about the same velocity-around 1770 fps average of the 2 barrels give or take with the left barrel always faster than the right depending on bullet weight. Now it is time to find a shorter front sight as it hits low at all ranges, have'nt cut the sight leaves yet because of that.

Big Mike

I suspect that the 425 gr. bullet is at the high end of what this rifle will regulate because of the small velocity regulation window that was seen with it. What do you folks think on that subject?

BigMike,

Sounds like you have found the right combination. Congrats.

If everything from 300-425 regulates @ 1770 fps then you've got a "keeper".

FWIW, I killed my American Buffalo (Bison) with a 45/70 loaded w/405grs @ 1800fps. Dead, dead

So I'd try the 425's and see which shoots the best....hard to go wrong with the results you are getting with the 400's.

I wouldn't waste the time and money, Mike.

Under and oversized bores are way more common than most think, and standard ammo is regularly fired in them all. One of my double rifles is .0035" undersized in the groove, and shoots fine with standard diameter jacketed bullets with no issues. While I do size down off the rack jacketed bullets for it now, it doesn't seem to make a dime's worth of difference. I wouldn't mess with sizing down jacketed bullets for an .002" difference.

When Hornady was working up their new .450/.400 3" Nitro Express factory ammo, they were worried about this because there are quite a few .408" rifles out there, and CIP standard today is .410". So, they made up a .408" pressure barrel and tested .410" jacketed bullets in it. The difference in pressure was something like 600 PSI.

Standard .458" lead core jacketed bullets will be fine, just stay away from monos.

Thanks for the input on the bullet sizing.I did try sizing some 405 gr. Remingtons-got them down to
about .457 but the cast has been so good that I don't know if I will even bother to try them.As far as monos the are reserved for my .458 win. mag.
