On a trip to Africa in the 1970's, I picked up a badly abused Farquharson, made, I believe, by Gibbs, and chambered for the .450/.400 NE. Both barrel and stock were in deplorable condition, so I replaced the stock with a duplicate, using the original buttplate, etc. and had the rifle rebarrelled in caliber .50 Alaskan. Although I still enjoy shooting it in this configuration, I have from time to time entertained the thought or restoring it to its original condition with a genuine NE caliber, such as .500 NE.

Can anyone recommend a gunsmith I could safely entrust with this task?

I must say I have a thing for these guns. I have a best quality Gibbs that I rebarreled to .303 from 7x65r(yuck!), its a pretty straight forward job. It would say Gibbs on it if it was retailed by them, otherwise it is most likely what is known as a trade Farkey. See the thread entitled my super .30, its my Holland on a trade action. I would be willing to rebarrel your gun to an appropriate caliber after my Stag hunt, I'll return at the end of April. heres a link to my website that has a picture of the Gibbs fit with a new Krieger barrel

I have a soft spot in my heart, and an empty spot in my wallet, for these guns. Just located a very nice, virtually mint example of a lightweight Gibbs in 303 Nitro proofed, marvelous engraving and the $#*R$& who had it knew exactlyh what it was and what it was worth. But he did sell it to me with a smile . . . . Dave

Nothing wrong with 7.65R as a cartridge, but I agree not in a Gibbs. In a German or Austrian rifle, it is quite 'appropriate' and I shot it quite happily there. But my 'Brits' seem to 'feel better' with the 303s going down their barrels.

By the way, neat, neat gun and great work. My compliments. Dave
