BOLT TAKEDOWN SUGGESTIONS REQUESTED!!!
      #74634 - 26/03/07 01:50 PM

I am considering an custom takedown bolt action rifle in the future with a Mauser action.

What would be the best combinations to consider with the most usage.

30 cal what and 375 H&H ??

300 Wby and 375 Wby??

300 ultramag and 375 ultramag??

30-378 WBY and 378 WBY??(?gag!)

Any ideas??

300 H&H and the 375 H&H.

Build it with the classic British stock.

Why a takedown & switch barrel?

Why not two separate rifles? IMO the switch barrel works best in "theory". If "big game" is going to be hunted you will probably carry the larger caliber 75% of the time. I'd rather have a "matched pair" and given the cartridge combos you list, the 300H&H & 375H&H are classic no-brainers!

For cork sniffing

300 H&H and 375 H&H

For the feel and sound of the speedway

30/378 and 378 Wby

I agree if you want classic calibres,

the .300 H&H Mag and the .375 H&H Mag or the .400 H&H Mag.

If myself I would go for those or a 6.5x68, 8x68S and one of a 9.3x64 or wildcat 9.5x68 or 10.5x68.

I would get 2 takedown rifles, one in 375 H&H and one in 300 H&H, both made by Joe Smithson with Smithson QD mounts. The switchbarrel concept is not so appealing to me.
