A couple of questions.

For a DG Rifle what is your favourite type of engraving?

I tend to love everything but the really heavy Germanic style but I even like it on some applications

I really like fine rose and scroll, Holland Royal style bold foliate scroll and carved deep relief with game scenes (ala Brown Brothers) but I can appreciate most styles assuming the work is well done.

Andre,

Sorry for his OT question but do you know of any book or resource on Belgian engavers? While I am somewhat familiar with the leading American, Brtish and Italian names, it has always seemed somewhat strange to me that masterpieces from Belgium are created by semi anonymous craftsmen (at least they seem semi anonymous to the English speaking world.)

I would be grateful for aly resource that you could suggest and post the name of here. I am sure that all other members would be equally interested. Thanks and good hunting!

Well,
The Belgian masters are seen on: the top Brownings, Francotte's, Le Beau's....
Need I say more?

Whoops! My replay was a bit fast!
It is true that the Belgian engravers have a difficult time: they have always been amongst the very best in the world (as the Belgian gunmakers, who were happy to make best-quality guns for the 'best' London gunmakers until very recently)), so they never thought advertising a nessessity.
Now (a bit late) they see otherwise.
Alain Lovenberg is the man to see if you want the very best (he makes engavings for Hartmann& Weiss, Lebeau-Courally...(by the way THE best makers!).

Livinus,

I meant individual engravers not the major gunmakers.

Yes, Lebeau, Francotte, Dumoulin etc are among the greatest gunmakers in the world. In the past their ranks also included Forgeron, Pirotte, Mahillon etc. I agree that you have a reason to be proud.

I am interested in learning about individual Belgian artisans, and would appreciate any information on where I could find material on them.

Good hunting!

I like all types of Engraving I have seen many different styles and they all have there place. Yes there are many bad examples out there but that is what makes finding that great example worth the hunt. I am not a big fan of stock Engraving or carving but that’s just me.

I am in awe of most all engraving styles. I even like some of the early cartoonish animal engravings. Floor plates seemed to provide a great canvas to display their skill as well as "between the hammers" on underlever guns. My favorite is fruiting vine but I have never seen the theme used on a rifle.

Livinus is right, Belgian engravers lived on their reputation for too long and life was easy. They either got lots of subcontracted orders from the top gunmakers from all over the world or were employed by the Belgian big makers. This was the case with 2 famous FN master engravers : Louis Vranken and his successor José Baerten, who (lucky me) signed my double rifle pictured above.
Being under restrictive employment contract, most engravers, and among them some big names, did (do ?) moonlight under an alias though. Today, if asked for the present leading Belgian engravers, I'd think about Alain Lovenberg and Philippe Grifnée (NB.: yes, the one who porno-engraved the Francotte gun...).

Personalia :
Mehul, a Google search should net lots of info on Belgian engravers.

Livinus, keep me posted about your whereabouts in Belgium. I can't tell yet if I'll be around on 08/20th. Either that week (or the week before ?) I'll be guest-hunting Chamois in the Austrian Alps in the Swarovski preserve. Actual dates are not set yet.

Curl,

Magnificent! I would buy a gun solely for the engraving for a Morris or Kell style fruiting vine motif.

Superb examples Curl! that Piotti is wonderful!

I am a big fan of Bulino style engraving, the detail is where it's at for me.

I have watched engravers work at several styles of engraving and to see a master doing Bulino is something else!

I have no idea how ANYONE can have that much patience and foresight as to what is going to become of all those minscule dots.... it's "pointalism" at its zenith!

Mikey,
Interesting site, he has a very unique style.

Curl,
The Holland is a 10 bore paper case (.775 bore) paradox 6 dram gun.

Hammers are another interesting canvas on older guns and how about the screws?
