.577 gas checks
      #74497 - 25/03/07 01:34 AM

I'm thinking about having some gas checks made for .577 so that cast molds could be made and used in the 577. I thin it would be a lot of fun to shoot cast bullets out of these big boys. Set up is a little expensive. Would anybody be interested in buying some.

I have used non-GC lead bullets in a .585 nyati and found that GC was not necessary at 1400 fps.

A friend here in SLC paper patches his .470 cast bullets and pushes them 2100 fps with no leading. However, paper patched bullets cannot be crimped.

500Grains

What style cast bullet are you shooting in the 585?

There are seveal 577's on order and I plan on using a lighter lead bullet. Have not decided on the weight yet but Im thinking somewhere in the 550-600gr range.

I was using 1200 grain bullets from a NEI mould. They sure made a nice WHACK! when they hit the backstop, but I never shot game with them. 1200 grains at 1400 fps didn't recoil too much either. Accuracy was ok, but not spectacular.

In a double that bullet would be very unlikely to regulate.

I think you can push lead bullets to 2000+ fps with out leading with out using gas checks. Try doing a search for LBT there are a group who have done extensive research on lead bullet casting alloying and heat treating. I have shot full house weal weight alloy loads out of a 454 casull with out excessive leading. I would try the bullets with out gas checks and see how they do.

Thanks Bill
I know it can be done but the alloying / heat treating lubing etc can get pretty technical. The condition of the bore is critical. My experience with shooting bullets in rifles is that with a good gas checked bullet and water quenched wheel weight lead it is pretty simple to get good results. I like simple.

You might try using cardboard "gas checks", actually just a cardboard disc under the bullet. They whole idea is to isolate the bullet from the hot gases produced as the powder burns and this works great. I have used it in 45/120, 416 rigby and 50/140 with excellent results, no leading and very good accuracy. Cut to slightly over bullet diameter they just go in with the bullet and many of our loads are slightly compressed, so placement or movement after loading is not a problem.

es,
Piostalchamp has a good idea and I have seen people use a sheet of bees wax or lube to protect the base of the bullet. Just push it into the case (the case acts as a cutter) and seat the bullet.
I really think at the velocity you will be getting with the 577 you shouldn’t have a big problem with leading as long as your bore is ok. If your bore is to rough gas checks will not help. Try the water quenched wheel weight lead it should be just fine. If you have been loading for rifle with lead you know the better bullet lubes to use.
What load are you going to use? What load is your rifle regulated with?

An idea I tried years ago was to cut .600" discs out of brass shim stock and center them on the bullet sizing die under the lead bullet. Running the bullet through the sizing die produced a close approximation of a gas check which remained attached to the recovered bullets. Cutting a .600" recess in the face of the die made it much easier to center the discs, but is not essential. This technique obviated the need to create a special bullet with an undersize base to accomodate conventional gas checks.

In these days of super adhesives, gluing a .585" brass disc to the bottom of the bullet would probably do just as well, but would not prevent leading.

Bill it came with 8 rounds of 107 R-15 and 650 woodlieghs. shot well with that . it is a 650/90 cordite gun. Just ordered 50 .577 650's about $106.00 for 50. It will be several months it seems before I can get all the components together to load for it. Huntington said there are no cases (3") to be found. It is surprisingly mild to shoot with the 107 grain load. I hope to duplicate that with a cast bullet. If I can get the gas checks I will then have a mold made to fit the check that will approximate the 650 bullet. The bores show some slight cordite burn but are in good shape. I could probably get by with a plane based bullet but it is so much easier with a gas check bullet.

I cast an 800gr. plinking bullet for my 600. It is from Mountain Mold's custom design websight. I use a tuft of pillow fiber behind the bullet and push it to 1500 fps with no leading at all and good accuracy.
