I`m thinking on a wildcat cartridge.

the tough way, take the .404, shorten it a little bit to say 68 mm, neck it down to 8mm and give it a good shoulder, the brass can either be original .404 Jeffrey brass, or basic brass as that gives me the the chance to make the name on the round myself.

The simple way, take the Dakota round neck it down to 8mm and be happy with it, call it 8mm/375 Dakota.

The even simpler way , take the .375 Ruger and neck that down.

Suit the rifle to use 170 grain to 250 grain bullets.

So am i completely on the field of lunacy or isit a doable project this one, its just in the thinking box so it wont happend in a awhile.

One of the old writers on Guns&Ammo, Outdoor Life, American Rifleman, etc., Col. Charles Askins was a fanatic on the 8MM. He wildcatted several 8MM rounds and went straight to Africa to test them out. I think he did 6-8 wildcats with the mandatory trip to Africa IIRC. That's just trips testing his wildcats, Lord knows how many trips he actually went on.

Just take one of Remington's UltraMag cartridges and neck it to .323.

You might re-invent the 8x68S with a sharper shoulder.

I believe the .375 Ruger uses 8x68S brass as its base.

Still a good idea.

My brain went the other way.

Take the 375 Ruger and open it up to 416 equaling the
velocities of the 416 Taylor at lower pressures in a standard length action(both 2.5" hulls)

Be better than the 375 Ruger for a DG carbine in Alaska, etc.

But is the lower pressure worth the bother?

Hopp Doc, there you gave me a good idea which i havenmt thought about. a 416 based cartridge on it.

A little offtopic in my own thread , i sendt a mail to Harry Selby a little while ago, and hes favourite caliber was the .416 . Hmm that has given me the name for a .416 cartridge also.

Grog, these forums are expensive, you use lot of money to do strange cartridges.....

But this is a project of a couple of years, and perhaps there has come a .416 Ruger till then.

The .375 Ruger is not the 8x68 case. It is larger, as in .532" at the head, not .522". The .375
Ruger's case will give slightly greater capacity than the .375 mag, but in a modern-type case which handles our powders slightly better than the longer sloping case.
: Necked to .416, it would deliver about the same ballistics as the .416 Remington, as the capacities would be very close - within a grain or two. The .416 "Ruger" would fit in standard .30/06 length acitons, perfectly, allowing about any bullet seating length one wanted as it has a 2-5" case.

Well if im gonna make a 416 Ruger cartridge, the name can be .416 Selby as he is the prophet of the 416 Rigby.

I hope that they will make lots of ammo for various types on that brass, and now i have figured out three,

I was thinking, will a large sportingammunition firm like Norma will they be interrested in hiring me if i have designed some cartridges of my own? Will that count as other qualifications ?

WEll the idea is great but i dont know the basic cartridge of the 375 ruger??!!

Listen: it will not be new! Casue the .375 Hölderlin!! Rimed or not rimed has the CIP noW!

The .375 Ruger appears to be based on a shortened, necked down .404, very similar and in between the short and ultra mags. It's base diameter is .532" (same diameter as the belt on a standard belted magnum case) and it's 2.5" long. Check your J.J. Donnely's book or CTG. of the World for similar case measurements. The improtant measurement is the base diameter. Shorter cases are simple to make from any length brass. The base diameter is the clincher.

That case in .375 calibre IS the very best of them all. imho - When I thought up and built the first one in around 1985, I named it the 9.5x68. Huntington's makes dies now.
