Pigs, the common man's big game
      #7407 - 25/01/04 02:17 AM

Pigs, Boar, Hogs, Warthog, Bushpig - whatever they are called, they are eagerly hunted. North and South America, Europe, Asia, introduced to Australia, Africa, they are hunted everywhere by dedicated pig hunters.

In NZ the pig hunters are far more fanatical than deerhunters. In Spain they like to shoot them by the hundred.

Stabbed, speared, shot with shot or bullet they are fair game.

What is it about pigs that you enjoy and makes you want to hunt them again and again?

A walk along a river or creek at either end of the day watching big pigs rooting the banks is always a top scene for the hunter and the relatively high success rates on pigs makes them a very targetable species especially for the young fella doing the learning curve thing as they are as a huntable species that little bit further up the hunters evolutionary ladder.
The fact that when i was younger we could go out and nail 20 or more for a quick mornings hunt....sometimes very fast and furious shooting with multiple shots on fast breaking pigs enabling one to have fantastic rifle/gun experience for later life, often enough around those days to bypass good pigs for better ones made for great days.

Catching big boars with good dogs and finishing with a knife is a fantastic way of hunting and can be a very exciting hunting pastime, sometimes with a small element of danger in being cut up yourself adds "flavour" to this fast paced sport.Although the old pig hasnt the great all round senses of the major game species here in Oz there are probably more pig hunters here than all other hunters combined.I spoke to the editor (BJ) of Guns `n Game about the lack of deer on his mag cover and he said to me that every boar on the front cover sold many more editions than any deer pic ever would........so they even win the magazine points the old humble pig.

The solid thwack of a bullet reaching far out on a big boar on the plains is a welcome sound for any hunter to hear especially when said boar go`s arse over on the spot which adds to the day of course and when you get a big fella giving his best to give it back to you in a close encounter thats a real buzz too....dogs an hog in a whirlpool ball and you trying to get in with the knife makes for special mem`s for me as well

They're available, numerous, can be dangerous, have a trophy (teeth). I would like to take all the worlds available pig breeds, that would be something.

As Bakes said they are numerous and when you don't have anything else to hunt and the urge to use your rifle is strong then they are the only choice.Other animals are hunted only in the season but for pigs there is no season(not around here at least)and so when we are bored and would like to do some shooting we go out and kill a few pigs.Besides we are also doing a public service for the farmers whose farms are regularly destroyed by these animals.

Pigs being prolific breeders is probably one of the main reasons for their popularity among hunters and lack of popularity among farmers as Iqbal indicates.

Iqbal

Is the meat used in your country? If not for humans, for dogs or pet meat? Just interested.

There're few species where you can hunt several (2, 3 o more) in just one day. With Buffs or Elephants would be very expensive , but with boars you can hunt 5 on the same hunt .

Pigs - the Bushpig [Re: NitroX]

The Bushpig of Africa

Here's one trophy that has eluded me on two different safaris even though it was high on the list. Mostly because it was a chance pursuit only. Next trip I want to concentrate on them for several days.

470Nitro my friend

every time I have visited Africa I have heard stories of Spaniards hunting or wanting to hunt pigs in Africa, whether pigs, bushpigs or warthogs.

I have concluded Spanish hunters are pig hunting crazies!

John,as you are probably aware that pig meat is forbidden in Islam and cannot be used for any purpose whatsoever, so much so that any product which has this substances even in the minutest quantity is tabboo. There are certain sects around here(non muslims)like hindus who relish this meat and take away the pigs that we shoot. For them it's a bonanza as being generally poor they hardly have a chance to eat any meat.At times we are requested by friends in various embassies to bring back our hunt which we do and give it to them.So all in all the meat is seldom wasted.

Prolific.

Get big (an excuse to "justify" a big gun.

Around here they are feral hogs and can be hunting year round. The imported Russian boar and boar crosses however have a season.
