Nick

Thanks. I had an invitation to hunt a tiger in Malayasia a few weeks back. A friend's Father owns a Tea Plantation.

Aside for it being illegal for me to touch a rifle there, although I think bacshesh would have taken care of it, and no hope of ever getting it home, unless I moved to Mexico, I thought about it for a couple of weeks.

Just couldn't justify it no matter how hard I tried. I heard last week that his Father invited a local Military leader to shoot and they killed it. Despite their being rare and even endangered they are still a problem for people in their vicinity.

Thank you for your efforts.

More of that goes on than is broadly known.

An outfitter operating in the region once told me (about ten years ago) they had been invited to setup an operation to hunt tiger, Asian rhino and other game in Indonesia. They declined the "opportunity".

Invitations to hunt various game in India still happen.

All of it is "below the table" of course.

If it was just hunting of the reasonably numerous deer or antelope species that still exist, other than being illegal, it wouldn't be the killing of very endangered species, but tiger or rhino??? Hard to justify on any ethical grounds unless it was officially sanctioned and actual PAC (problem animal control) hunts. Or as part of a real conservation management programme.

Also jails in some of these countries are less than pleasant.

It would be a shame if tigers no longer existed in the wild. Hopefully the countries still with viable populations one day soon get their act together.

Problems with endangered species are always quite complicate. As most people know an animal can be endangered in part, or most of it's range and still be overpopulated or a problem in the remaining part.

I got the impression that in Java and various other parts of Malaysia Indonesia Tigers and Leopards are a real problem.

I have an acquaintance in Seattle that, I believe, was taken on and killed a Snow Leopard about 5 years ago in India. He has a friend who is a Maharajah and some marvelous pictures of his friends 'Hunting Lodge'. Pictures of tracks, a tour, complete with gun-bearers, a ground blind and a live Leopard on a tied up Goat.

No Trophy pics but an enigmatic smile when asked if he shot it.

They are beautiful animals. Perhaps tempting beyond refusal.
