SHOT MY 600 OVERKILL TODAY

I was finally able to get out and shoot the 600 today. I was shooting some 900 grain woodliegh soft points at 2300 ft/sec. I thought they would be worse than they were. I did fire the last round with out the break. It did smack me pretty good. I will try some at 2400 ft/sec next time I get out in a few weeks. My rifle weighs 13.6 lbs. I did not experience any part of the rifle torquing out of my hands. That brake is loud but it reduces recoil by a solid 40%. I put 8 rounds in a 7" circle at 100 yards. I had one flyer or it would have been a 4" circle. It does put big holes in the paper! I did not have anyone to take pics, just went alone, except I think Kyle was looking down on me. I never really feel alone when I am shooting anymore.

Very nice! What was the load? So there was no differences or appearance in torque between the braked and unbraked shots?

I noted on a packet of 900gn RNSN woodleighs that it has a recomended impact velocity of between 1700 and 2000 FPS,so why are you punishing yourself.
Remember speed isn't everything !

Alan, I got this rifle so I could push 900 grain bullets to 2400 ft/sec. Why?, you ask, because it can be done. I will use solids next time. Some woodleighs, and a copper solid also. Some may call this punishment, I call it something to do.I have always liked shooting big bores. Power wise this gun was the next step. My 14.25 lb. 585 Wells Magnum shoots a 750 grain bullet at 2500 ft/sec. from a 24" barrel. It has no brake. So this is the next logical progression up for me. KennethI, the load I used was 165 grains of H4350. I guess there was a little twist without the brake. I did not really notice it much. I did notice the recoil was considerably more without the brake. My 600 does have a 26 1/2" barrel plus the x-brake on top of that.

I think in theory that the muzzle brake should make no difference to the torque of the gun. However, because the muzzle brake is reducing the recoil then it could mean you have more control of the torque of the gun.

That sure is big power.....sort of double the 458 Lott which in turn would mean 4 times the recoil in equal weight guns. I am getting a headache and sore neck just talking about this

I do shoot alot of big stuff, and have for a long time. But I am 45 years old, 5'-9" tall and weigh over three hundred and thirty pounds. So I am certainly no stud. I gave up lifting and working out 20 years ago. I am not kidding when I tell you this gun is totally shootable. With the brake on, it is not painful at all, and I would say kicks less than an unbraked 460 weatherby. It is certainly no pea shooter, but it is totally manageable. It will probably be a month before I get the full 2400 ft/sec loads. I will let you know what I think after shooting them.

I've been on & off here for a couple of years but this is my first post. Since I just ordered one of AHR's 600ok rifles, I like reading what you guys with them have to say. I ordered 100 rounds of brass to hold me over until the rifle shows up. I currently shoot a 600jdj from SSK and have done extensive load development on that cartridge so I have some knowledge of what I was getting into with this 600. I'm getting mine like Safarikid's with a 20" bbl but I plan on keeping the speed down around 2100 fps. as the rifle will weigh around 10 lbs. 1950 fps kills spectacularly so 2100 should be plenty.

I am sure 8800 ft.lbs. is more than enough for any living thing. I hope you like your AHR as much as Tom and I do. How much longer before yours is ready??

What I was trying to say was that the projectile you are using was designed and built to shoot at between 1700 and 2000 FPS.
Not 2400-2500 FPS
It is OK if you are shooting paper however on big boned big game it is a whole different ball game.
You will probably find that on buffalo you will get better penetration at the recomended speeds..

Thanks Bigdog-----you got that right. It's amazing to use these rounds on game and see what that much foot pounds acts like. Ed tells me 5 months or less. I'm sure I will like it much. I'm already cooking up loads. Al, you're right about the bullets.

Alan,
I hear what you are saying on the bullets. Down the road when I get to go on a hunt, I will definately use an appropriate speed for the designed bullet. For now, I am just having fun blasting away.
