Pith Helmet -safari hat
      #72930 - 02/03/07 10:16 PM

I'm looking for some sort of headgear that would work equally good for both equatorial forests aswell as east africa.. Too much to ask for?

I've seen several types og pith helmets for sale, french, Indian and Wolseley models.. Wich are good for general african hunting? I also need a version that is rather large in size.

Does anyone know where to get one at a reasonable price? I don't want to look like a clown either, so I'm not interested in anything else but a plain good-working model. Ie no zebrahide around the top etc...

Personally, any hat on your head in thick scrub / rain forrest is a pain in the arse - especially something with a wide brim.

I prefer something you can use to wipe your head like a piece of towlling - it also stops the sweat.

As for Africa, well if it's to keep the sun off, a good Aussie Slouch Hat (made of rabbit fur felt) is quite good but some of the new hats around with MESH side are very light, screw up easily for packing and achieve the same result.

And what wrong with "zebrahide around the top etc... !!!

Hm.. You're not a moderator or something..? I could swear I put in an answer last night....! Must've been more tired than I realised...

Well, last thing first.. I't's nothing Wrong with that kind of headgear. It's just not my kind of style. I'll draw a parallell to pimped cars: they're very nice for those that are attracted to such, I'm not - I'll stick with the way my car looks like from the start.

Anyway, thanks for det advice I'll look into hats with mesh. I liked the idea of a hat that allows air to escape.
I've worked "down under" for a year, and used a wide hat with a oilskin type of material. Dark brown colour. It kept the sun out of my eyes, but it was b..... warm!

Bonde

Found the ones I use.

http://www.kakaduaustralia.com/index.php?fuseaction=product.list

The one I use is the 'townsville' Canvas And Mesh Hat
but they don't have a Picture.

The Bendigo below it is the same except the Suede is replaced by Canvas - much lighter and I find I can screw them up and put it in my pocket but when I pull it out, it goes back to shape.

Get the Canvas one from my 2nd post.

Mine are Dark Brown in Colour so blend in well.

I believe you can also get a slightly lighter
more sandy colour which is also good.

Good luck.

keep an eye out on ebay. There are always vintage piths there for a decent price. I've bought a bunch....Indian, Spanish, English...and don't think I've ever paid more the $30 USD. Granted, the vintage pieces might be a bit soiled but that only adds to their character IMO. Here's one on ebay now.
