Well that had to been a while back, to travel with 13 guns and 2600 rounds of ammo. Gee's now you get all kind of grief with just one and a box of 20. Then again back when the Col A was serving the Nation they had a different outlook on things, my guess the Airforce didn't have a problem with all of the stuff he traveled with.

Great Article. I just got back from Thailand and Cambodia. Things have changed a bit since then. Cambodia would be a grand place to hunt if you could avoid the land mines.

A funny thing. Back in 1996 I was going for a holiday to Thailand. To the coast, Aputathaya (spelling? - the old capital), Chang Mai and Chang Rai, and the Golden Triangle.

I thought why not see what hunting is available so checked an hunting encyclopaedia I had.

WOW!!!!

Elephant, lion, Asian rhino, species of deer etc etc etc

Fantastic.

Then thought. What is the date of this World Hunting Encyclopaedia?

Turned out to be 1967, even though I had bought it only a few years earlier.

I world of difference in that thirty years to the detriment of our natural lives.

During my holiday it was rare to see anything out of a fenced park that was wild. I think it mostly has been logged, poached, eaten, tamed, ground up into powder for stupid old mens vanities ... etc

These old stories are great though.

Is Cambodia still more "wild" and natural than Thailand?

I don'[t know if which country would be considered wilder. Cambodia has a much lower population density. After 25 years of intense Civil War and millions of casualties Cambodia is more shell shocked than wilderness.

It is estimated the Chinese took out the horns of over 100,000 deer/year under the Khmer Rouge rule.

Land mines are a major hazard everywhere and it the actual fighting has only been over for 5 years or so. I had thought the Khmer Rouge ceased to exist after 1980 but the last ideologues were captured in 2001 and still await trial. I would guess that the current Government hopes they die before the need for a trial. At Angkor Wat you are still warned not to leave the beaten path because of mines.

Cambodia has very little infrastructure left in the countryside and any hunting would need to be supported by non existent means. The areas we would like to go into were the last bastions of the Khmer Rouge and some are still around. The price of capture is Death.

Perhaps in a few more years of peace it may come back but I have been told it is still very dangerous to travel about where hunting would take place.
