Removing oil and grease before hunting Africa
      #72807 - 01/03/07 05:15 AM

I am in the habit to pour either trichlorethylene or ether in the "innards" of my rifle prior to going to Africa.
Especially in Burkina Faso, the sand is everywhere and in the air when the Harmatan wind is blowing.
It may result that the sand particles will agglomerate with the oil or the grease in the works, forming a paste that could jam the rifle or at least act as sandpaper and damage the mechanisms.
This decision is a two-edged sword : my rifle visited the Victoria falls and was rusted to the point that only the gunsmith managed to release the bolt.

In Utah we often hunt deer in very dry and dusty conditions. If a rifle has any oil on it, the oil turns into oily mud. So I hunt with a perfectly clean, dry, non-oiled rifle. For Africa I use a bit of oil due to the higher humidity.

I remove all oil with a solvent spray and a clean, dry cloth. Then I wipe all moving parts down with a silicone cloth. I take the cloth with me on the hunt, and wipe down the rifle every evening. Upon returning home, the rifle is stripped down, then oiled for storage in the safe.

I have begun using the following product on my bolts and outside of the barrels, Poly Pro-Tek. It is a polymer "polish" that also is very slick when dry. The polymer lasted the entire 16 days of hunting in Tanzania without wearing off.

Scott, where did you get the Poly Pro-tek? Is it a "gun product"?

I have used a very small amount of gease and then wiped it off. It leaves enough of a film for a day and doesn't trap too much dust.

Larcher,

In Africa, I have used a Birchwood Casey product called Sheath Rust Preventive. They come as a cloth in small packets, and when I have used them to wipe my rifle, it leaves a dry protective layer. Which keeps dust from sticking.

At home though, were it seems to always rain during hunting season, I have had best luck with Shooter's Choice Rust Prevent. It leaves a thicker layer which is more sticky than the Sheath cloth stuff, but since dust is not a problem when it's raining, it this doesn't matter IMO. It seems to protect against rust better than the many other products I've tried, and I'd probably choose this for a rainforest hunt.

Erik

I picked it up at one of the gun shows here in Florida. The product is called Poly Pro-Tek Gun-Care. The company is WaterlessRus, Inc.

Their phone number is 888-788-9274. The website is www.reallycleanguns.com.

The stuff is easy to use and does not seem to wear off quickly.

1. shake the bottle.
2. apply to the surface and let dry.
3. buff off with a terry or microfiber cloth.

I have used it on my rifles and muzzleloaders. It will remove tarnish as well and make the metal "slick". I really like it on the bolts. It also resists fingerprints and the resulting tarnish from handling the barrel. No removed bluing on my barrels. The only downside is that it will make the metal shine more (a high polish). I cured the problem in Tanzania by wraping some camo guaze tape (pro form I think) around the barrel. Stalked within 30 yards, in open terrain, of three duga boys with the rifle slung on my shoulder. It should also cause water to bead off.

I've never had a problem with dust and rifles in Africa or Australia.

Just wipe the rifle when I've put my sweaty hands on it with an oily rag kept in the gun case.
