Cartridge box question.
      #72735 - 28/02/07 12:17 PM

Didn't know how else to word the title but I am curious as to the reason British ammo makers made 5 round boxes of ammo for the big double rifle calibers. It would make sense to me to have a six round box but I was never consulted by Kynoch on the matter. Having never seen any of the older German ammo boxes were they packaged the same? Also had a bit of good fortune recently. As I had posted earlier I have purchased a 500 BPE double from my friends family after he passed away in December. Well, the original sling has been located. It has hooks on each end and is a 1 1/4 inch wide leather strap that is adjustable in length. No maker marks are visible but the leather is getting a little bit frayed so I will try to have a duplicate made. Also, does anyone have a picture of an original box for 500 Black Powder Express ammo? Dave didn't have any and I've never seen one. Thanks, Chris.

Don't know about the BIG bore Kynoch ammo boxes but about 10 years ago Speer packaged their 375H&H african loads in twenty round boxes that had 4ea, 5 round boxes inside. The 5 round box was perfect to fit in shirt pocket. I used the boxes for a couple of years but they finally wore out. I thought it was a slick idea but certainly cost more I suppose. I would BUY some of the 5 round boxes if i could find them.

Chris-

Careful with that sling.
The old leather will break when you least expect it. Dinged muzzles, broken hammers, and chipped stocks are no fun.

The shepherd hooks are neat though aren't they!
I have a set of them for my Tolley.
Cool stuff.

Chris:
How far back do you want to go?
This is probably the most "original" .500 Express packet you will find!
String-tied brown paper. Marvellous! (...and pretty easy to reproduce!)

This one is more recent. Note that these early BP packets held 10 cartridges, it was only the later Kynoch packets which held 5 rounds.

The later Kynoch 5-round packets looked like this:

Hope you find this useful.

I should add that we have a lot of fun reproducing vintage ammunition packets to add authenticity to our Big Game Rifle Shoots and Arms Collectors Meetings!

It always looks 'cool' to snip the string and rip open a brown paper packet of large-bore Express cartridges at the firing line!

Thanks for the pictures. That was what I had in mind, just didn't know what it looked like. Most of what I see at gun shows are the later nitro loads in the 5 round boxes. Cost and arm and a leg too.

Chris:
The Kynoch box-colours were red-and-yellow for nitro cartridges, red-and-blue for 'nitro-for-black' cartridges, and red-and-green (as pictured) for black powder Express cartridges.

Note that Kynoch red-and-green BP boxes are uncommon because the BP era had essentially finished before the amalgamation under the Kynoch name. Most Kynoch packets encountered today are post-WWII red-and-yellow boxes for nitro-express ammo.
