Colt-Sauer Drillings

OK drilling guys. Opinions/info on Colt-Sauer drillings. Are they just a JP Sauer gun that's imported/marketed by Colt? Anyone own one? Comments on quality?

Thanks.

Jeff

Jeff,

Their quality is not quite the the quality of the regular 3000 series guns. The wood is a bit inferior, and the engraving, although game scene, is not as well executed, by and large. The guns are just fine, and function like the 3000 series. They also have no cheek piece and have the slab beavertail forend. For a lefty, they are the best answer, as the stock can be oil bent to fit and has no cheek piece on the wrong side. I owned one when they were new and sold for about $1,200...a bunch of lucre back then.

They are modern drillings with good steel, thicker barrels, and in good chamberings for N. American hunters. I wouldn't turn one down, but they sell for a bit less than the regular 3000s and Weatherby variation. Hope this helps a bit.

Of all the drillings i've been around i've known of 3 with broken extractors. All 3 were 30-06 chamberings and all three were Sauers... My best friend owned one of them, and he said it was more common with the Sauers with rimless carteidges.

Weatherby also sold rebadged Sauer drillings...

My wife and I each have a 12x12x30-06 Sauer Drilling. We like them a lot. It is my wifes favorite hunting gun.

They handle like a good double shotgun.

I have seen the Colt Sauer's and would not hesitate to get one at all.
