I could fully translate the text, including slang and local idioms, but I'll only consider it if you post complete photos of the rifle.

Hello Sinner

The language is Urdu, the top line reads “ 400 bore double barrel cordite type number 3418”.

The person it was made for probably was not fluent in English so the local gun dealer wrote out the rifle’s description in his local language. The lower writing basically names different accessories in the rifle case.

The important date is on the lower left hand corner of the paper “ May 1918” which represents the delivery/manufacture date.

Hope this helps.

Regards
Aziz

Hi Sinner,

Don't believe what Aziz says. I am an acknowledged expert in all Asian languages. I will give you the true message. The passage translates as this:

"To the one into whose hands this rifle shall come:

You shall immediately place it in safe packaging and post it to Roscoe Stephenson, Covington, Virginia USA."

I'm sure you find this injunction quite surprising. Frankly, I am surprised also. Nevertheless, it must be obeyed, because the message goes on to say that:

"Failure to obey will result in a scourge of the pox on you and your kindred."

You must understand that certain Asian customs cannot be ignored. Thank you for your prompt compliance. The command is so written.

Have no fear. I will care for this rifle meticulously. It is truly a breathtaking arm.

Curl

P.S. By way of further explanation, the command refers to my grandfather, who in 1918 was a prominent attorney in Covington, Virginia, but now deceased. As his namesake, and by ancient custom, I now succeed to the benefit of this requirement and will fully perform all duties to receive and take care of this fine rifle. Thank you once again for recovering this treasure.

Curl, thank you for the comical entry. I think you forgot the bottom line which reads: And if the one who holds this rifle shall encounter a Woodward snap action in the same calibre, then it is written that the 2 guns should mate and have twin 22 hi powers.

Farhan:
you too may want Curl to translate the lable in the case of your .360

I am sure it will closely resemble that of Sinner's case label.

Sinner,

I think Capt. Curl realized I was joking and just urging you to show photos. In truth, I couldn't have told you what the language was. Sorry for too much deadpan.

Beautiful rifle.

Aziz,

Thanks for taking up the slack.

Very nice.

The picture of the symbol looks like a family or royal crest. All very interesting as well. It's great that a translation can be had so quickly.

If it isn't too much trouble can you post close up pictures of the action?

Hello Sinner

Congratulations it is a beautiful rifle.I agree with banzaibird the symbol is a crest but does not have the classic features of a crest belonging to an Indian Maharaja or Nawab.

Could you tell me a little more about the crest, is it on the gun case or something else.

Regards
Aziz

Twin .22 High Powers, the scions of Woodward and Fraser. That sounds fabulous! One for a lawyer and one for a sinner! I'm in. . . .

Curl

P.S. Sinner, where in USA do you hang your hat?
