I looking at getting a 416Rigby made on a custom magnum mauser action and once I have the action all work can be done in Australia except being proofed, I know competant gunsmiths can do this but in Australia there is no proof laws and I was thinking of sending the barreled action to London or Birmingham proof House to get this done , any thoughts on this or am I wasting my money?

Wasting your money, unless you will export the rifle to England by either moving there yourself or selling the rifle there.

I've had a pair of shotguns reprooved in England and the expense isn't at the proofhouses its in the shipping and insurance and the handling fees you will need to pay to a liscensed frim.

I think that this depends if you are either proofing the gun for safety or for the future value in the UK.

If it is for safety then please see my contribution under the proofing sticky.
Then it is not worth the trouble, you could prove the safety of the gun to your own satisfaction using the same method..

If the gun is going to be a classic masterpiece then perhaps for asthetic reasons then London proof marks would be worth the expense.

I know an RFD who is also a friend that would and could handle the gun for you to get this done but the choice to spend this money must be yours.

Regards

I phoned the London Proof House and spoke to the Proof Master and he said just send the rifle to them with all the import/export paperwork and will proof and export back to me, all at my cost of course. The actual proofing is the cheapest part of this exercise

$30 Proof
$12 extra if engraved proof marks
$12 certificate of proof

JPK & Bramble, thanks for info and advice.

I know I do not need the rifle to be proofed in Australia but I wish to own a rifle of "London Best Quality" like a H&H or Westley-Richards etc , I can not afford these makes but the rifle of same quality can be made in Australia for a lot less and the London proof marks just "add" to the rifle.

Then that is a really good reason to do it.
There was definatly a buzz to having that stamp on my humble home build.

The proof Master is a nice guy and it was a pleasure to do business with them.

What is shipping going to cost you BTW.

Shipping costs should be a lot cheaper now that Australia Post will now accept firearms in the mail again so going on costs from US to Australia about $100 one way plus I should not have to pay UK VAT ,so rough guess post, proof, insurance about $300+. I presume Royal Mail still accept firearms from O/S?

This must be a benefit of being a member of the commonwealth or something. Not possible to or from the US without lots of PITA. Also insurance cost were in four figures for me.

Jeez, it cost me what you quote with insurance to ship a nice rifle or shotgun to New Jersey, about a four hour drive!

If what you quote is accurate, I'd have everyone of my English guns reproved and many of my other guns proved too!

JPK,
Thats just a "rough" estimate the proof and mail costs will be the cheapest but insurance and customs brokerage will be the highest ,the cost of barreled action is approx $3000USD. I will get some quotes and post back.

JPK & 303;
Just to add some fuel to the fire..... in 2003 I had
a shotgun nitro proofed in Birmingham. Total cost, my
dealer to a dealer there, proof and return with insurance
was $345.40. I just last week sent another via the same
route and was quoted "no more than $425.00, probably less."
Good Luck

Firstly, I can not afford these makes but the rifle of same quality can be made in Australia for a lot less - ??? of same quality, maybe, and that is a big maybe. A few here could do it but big $ to do is right.

1. London Proof Marks will only add Novelty value to the 416, it is unlikely to add anything else unless it has a name to the gun.

Re $280 insured for $3000 mail return
$ 40 Proof

You forgot the 100 Pounds when the rifle leaves the UK
which is another $250.00

And if the Freight company gets slugged $100 coming through Singorpore or one of the other airports that charge, more money.

"or selling the rifle there" - it still wouldn't add any value to the gun.

Personally, I would spend the money on getting EAW or Holland Style Claw mounts instead of proofing it.

500Nitro,
I would be using Australia Post and Royal Mail not a Freight forwarder as too expensive, What is the $250 leaving UK?, I was told no VAT or GST, This would be a expensive project but still cheaper than a H&H who list a new "Best" rifle similar at approx $59,717+, I am budgeting on about $15000 but spread out over a couple of years

Well, until 3 days ago you wouldn't have been using Aust Post so you are lucky they change the rules !!

What is the $250 leaving UK? - a charge imposed by the UK Government

$15,000 - You could probably buy a 2nd hand Jeffrey etc in 404, 375 etc. I sold my Holland Take Down for not much more than that.

Re NEW Hollands at $59000, don't even worry about the prices
as they are not even targeting people like you. Buy 2nd hand guns.

I know of a Lancaster .470 N.E ejector for sale at present in the U.K asking price is £9,500, it has new barrels and is reported to be a good shooter. I can get further details if anyone should be interested.

Is that a Lancatser Sidelock (Wrist Breaker action)
or a Boxlock Webley Action ?

I used to have a Wrist Breaker action SLE Lancaster
- lovely gone - now with a mate in the US.
