338 FOR AFRICAN PG-NORTH FORK OR A FRAME???
      #70797 - 05/02/07 12:28 AM

I will be hunting large PG such as Kudu, Oryx, Wildebeest, Zebra, and ELand in Namibia this Summer and plan on shooting a 338WM.I am debating whether to use a Swift A Frame or North Fork--

It is probably splitting hairs and will come down to which bullet is more accurate in my rifle but does anyone have a preference for one over the other? I think the Swift may penetrate deeper but don't know for sure.

Any experience out there to prefer on over the other or is it just what the rifle likes?

I have no experience with the Northfork, but have nothing but praise for the A-frame 400 gr in a 416 Rigby.
Killed 3 animals with it, buff (1 shot), hippo (1 shot), croc (2 shots - see "what is your best shot.." thread).

I have used both North Fork and Swift A-Frame bullets in Africa with excellent results. You really can't go wrong with either one of them. Experiment with both makes and go with the one that shoots best out of your rifle -- it's that simple.

Last year I used 225 gr. Swift A-Frames in my 338 Win. Mag. on African game including Livingston's eland, greater kudu, blue wildebeest, nyala, bushpig, common waterbuck, etc, etc, and basically just about everything went down right now. Bullet performance couldn't be faulted in any way, and I've never used a better plainsgame bullet in all the years I've been hunting Africa. My hunting partner used the same exact 225 gr. Swift A-Frame load in his 338 Win. Mag. on the same safari with nearly identical, totally reliable and consistent results.

For example, I had a fleeting, almost impossible shooting opportunity on a very fine kudu bull that was moving away from us through a mopane forest, and he was about 200 yds. away by the time I was set up for the shot. Finally, I had his left shoulder in the scope as he moved between trees, and I pressed the trigger. He went down instantly, from all appearances, as soon as the rifle went off, and my PH couldn't keep track of what happened in his binoculars. The 225 A-Frame hit him right behind the left shoulder, busted everthing up inside, and was found just under the hide in front of the right shoulder. That bull didn't even know what hit him, and this was very typical performance.

My hunting partner had a now-or-never shot at an enormous old "blue-bull" eland at last-light one evening, and this shot was over 250 yds., and at an almost going-away angle. Tough shooting! But at the shot that huge eland went only a few yards and was found piled-up, stone-dead. My partner and his PH estimated that the recovered Swift A-Frame had penetrated something over 40", which is, in the real world, just about all you can expect from anything short of a solid.

Such performance speaks for itself...........

I used 250 Grain A-Frames (338 WM) on my last safari. Couldn't be happier with their performance. Used NF's in a 375 H&H also with excellent results. Both are great bullets, As was said earlier. Use the ones that shoot best in your rifle. NF's do have the prettier mushroom though

I've used A-Frames on Kudu and Gemsbok.....excellent bullet but I see no reason the Northfork wouldn't be as good

JUST MY OPINION BUT YOU REALLY NEED TO WATCH WHAT BULLET YOU USE WHEN SHOOTING THE ULTRA-MAG CALIBERS. THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO AFRICA I WAS SHOOTING A H-S PRESICION 300 ULTRA-MAG --I HANDLOADED 180 GR. NOSLER ACCUBONDS WHICH ARE SUPPOSE TO HOLD UP SIMILAR TO A PARTITION--MY EXPERIENCE WITH THEM IS THAT THE 3400FPS I HAD THEM LOADED TOO, IT WAS TOO MUCH VELOCITY AND PENETRATION WAS NOT GOOD AT ALL ON THE BIGGER ANIMALS SUCH AS WATERBUCK OR KUDU--AND ON IMPALA IT WAS EXTREMELY VIOLENT --

THE NEXT TRIP OVER I USED A-FRAMES EXCLUSIVELY IN THE 300 ULTRA MAG ALONG WITH THE 416 REMINGTON CALIBER --AS MENTIONED IN THE OTHER COMMENTS ABOVE--AWESOME PERFORMACE WITH EVERY RECOVERED BULLET RETAINING 85 TO 90% OF ITS ORIGINAL WEIGHT.

TO CONCLUDE, IN MY EXPERIENCE, AS GOOD AS THE PARTITION IS, IF YOU ARE GOING TO SHOOT THEM OUT OF A ULTRA MAG ON LARGER ANIMALS YOU SHOULD USE 200 GR. BULLETS AND/OR KEEP THEM LOADED TO 3200 OR LESS.
THANK YOU
RIPP

I'm trying to figure out how you concluded that you have to load the partitions down, because the accubonds didn't work for you????

IMHO the accubonds are NOT as good as partitions are!! I do agree that "in this case" the 200 grain bullets would be a better choise though...

I have a 338-378 WBY for long range elk sniping/hunting.

I now use the 250gr partion at 3000 fps but want to experiment with the new tunsgten Barnes MRX(when soon available) vs the Barnes TRX vs the Partition.I was going to play with the Nosler accubond but thanks, I think I will pass on that.

If accurate and the same BC a 225 gr bullet at 3200 should beat a 250 gr @ 3000. Time will tell.

I will presently pass on the North fork for long range shooting because visually the bullet configuration appears nonconducive for long range(350+ yd) shooting. For DG ranges GREAT,for long range questionable(to me).

Out to 300 yds BC is not usually a big factor. Past 300 yds it becomes important. At 500 yds it is a signifigant factor in retaining/maintaining bullet energy/trajectory.
