I'm looking at a Merkel single shot. They come in steel or alloy. thinking about a 7x57 or similiar.

Any thoughts or recomendations?

I would want it as light as possible. Also take a look at the Blaser K95.

Have you become a m-o-u-s-e? If you want a light rifle, get a AR-15, otherwise your best to stay with steel.

I shoot a drilling with alloy receiver that was made in the 1930's. I use the gun a lot, and it is still plenty tight. Keep the hinge pin well "padded" with white grease, and there should be no problems with it in 7X57, IMO.
