Looking for info on A.SCHOPFER Cape Gun.
      #70285 - 27/01/07 05:51 PM

Hi all. Recently I acquired a German Cape Gun with A.SCHOPFER on the rib. It has a top lever with hammers. Sidelock. The rear sight is a single leaf. The front a bead. The left barrel is Damascus and is 16 gauge. The right says 10.7 on the underneath. A black powder cartridge I'm assuming. I can't find anything out about the gunmaker and nothing about the 10.7 Rimmed calibre.

A gunsmith friend did a chamber cast but there are no matches to anything in Barnes. I don't have my Vernier calipers with me to write down the exact dimensions. Sorry. From a metal rule the chamber is almost 2.5" long. About 1.5" to the shoulder with about a 7/16" rim diameter.

A Cartridge collecter friend contacted a mate in Germany for help but he couldn't help either.

Can anybody help with this curious but beautiful gun?

Cheers, Doubleup.

Ps. I will try and add photos when I grapple with the technology to do so later.

Doubleup:
It may be a long shot I realize, but check the .43 Mauser (11mm Mauser, or 11.15 x 60 R). If that 10.7 mark refers to bore diameter rather than bullet diameter (ie 'land' diameter prior to cutting the rifling), then this could be it. The 11mm Mauser was a popular sporting cartridge long after it became obsolete as a military round.

Other than that, no definites, sorry.

Thanks Marrakai. This firearm came with about 50 of Bruce Bertram's 43 Mauser cases. I thought they may have been modified to suit, not specifically for the gun. Yet to slug the bore. But that's terrific. Thanks again. Will investigate further.

FWIW, it was indeed mornal to put land diameter as calibre on the rifle, not groove diameter as is done now - so it could well be 11mm Mauser indeed.
