I would love to catch a big fatty on dry land in broad daylight and get him to charge, but so far no luck.

In that video, it looks like Mr. S. is doing the shooting, with the client serving as backup.

I hate to join the MS bandwagon of hate, but I would not like to hunt with someone like that. Sit in front the hippo that could have been clealy shot from the get go, and then make it charge by kicking the leaves, just to have some camera footage. Also as Dan said, who's the client here? Not my cup of tea...

Chasseur--

Agreed.Seems like poor form when someone provokes an attack solely for video camera footage. Is that hunting or just killing? Is the hippo at that much disadvantage on land? I haven't hunted hippo so I can't say.

There is some good footage of some cow Ele charging a Landcruser further on.
Quite impressive the sudden increase in speed at the end as they drive away!

Gents;

That Hippo was bought and paid for. I does not matter if a charge was provoked or not, it was going to be killed. Neither MS, the client or any of us are bushmen and have any spiritual connection with the game. Imagine if your PH said “Oh, he's too far away, lets go back to camp”. Each one of you would be pissed if you did not get to kill an animal. Every MS client knows what's in store; getting an in-your-face charge. Of course MS has to do the shooting, he's the PH. He can't let his client get killed. I approve of his style if that's what your paying for.

It looks like a good advertisement for a double rifle.

Even allowing for the fact that the camera can make things look closer, further, bigger or smaller......I think that hippo is quite close when the second shot is fired.

bonanza,

I think Allen Day has been on one or more Mark Sullivan safaris and the "outcome" was different to popular opinion on Mark Sullivan.

Wouldn't you want a Mark V in that situation?

The worst thing that happens in Mark's movies are when the clients are at fault. All else looks straight up to me. I'll hunt with him, anytime, anywhere. Hopefully no later than '08.

Dan,

No!!!!

But I would prefer one of the Mark Vs in the 378 based calibres than a rifle that was trying to feed from a stagger and also get a case rim to slide under an extractor (while doing it at an angle )

But in the situation shown in the video I don't think it would matter whether the rifle was a Mauser type, Mark V or Ruger # 1

Mike

I've seen hippos on dry land twice at full speed.

The first at about 15 metres in a swamp in Kenya at a waterhole. We only had cameras but it was greased lightning running across our front to hit the water. Being a tourist group I wonder what would happen if the hippo decided to go through the camera jockeys?

The second was on a boat on the Zambezi. Someone had disturbed a hippo feeding higher on the hill in some bush and it came down at speed straight for an African fisherman at water's edge. We shouted for him to watch out, and luckily it veered. That hippo coming down a fairly steep bank would have been very hard to stop by shooting if on the ground. It is amazing how fast they can run too.

He does this crap just to get footage and sell videos/hunts. Too bad the hippo did not get him. Maybe next time his ticket will get punched.

I wish Mark would come out with more vids.My friend has a lot of safari vids that are as interresting to watch as the soap channel. Most of those dvds I wouldn't give you $1 for more less 30 or 40 bucks.I pay the $50 because Marks are intertaining.Thats the way I see it.Dave

With the number of times he puts himself into these situation, I think it is only a matter of time before something happens.

I would have liked to have seen this ahole with the rhino's horn in the right spot. Get a life. There has to be dignity in an animals death. This is show biz at a low point. I was always taught to give thanks at the end of a hunt, and have always. I doubt this guy did,

Valid zip code, huh? To view videos flagged as inappropriate, you have to sign up to be a member. When I signed up, I don't remember any zip code. Only reason I did it was to see what these animal rights bambi-ites consider inapprortiate.

Mark and the client shoot at the same time in this vid and the client stood firm. Clients often shoot first, esp on these hippos.

Mark accepts the risk. Those of you who'd like to see him get killed will likely have to wait a long time. Few can do what he does, year in year out.

As stated, these animals are bought and paid for by the client. Clients are not promised any charge, in fact most of his clients are not charged.

PETA and the like hate anybody killing any animal any way. I don't think they alone will get hunting in Africa banned in our lifetime. In fact I predict that Kenya will come back. The vids are not good for PR.

Mark does go on a bit, repeating himself, his routine. This bugs me a bit, mostly due to having alot of his vids.

There are many lessons to be learned from watching his videos, learned from what's done right and wrong.

He's a snob about British Double Rifles.

On camera he says to bring enough gun. If he doesn't know you he'll tell you to bring something milder, 375 or 450/400 and shoot it WELL.

He finds nice trophies.

He's a little expensive, but not the most. He doesn't require a huge deposit.

His book is very good.

Anyway you look at it Sullivans movies are exiting to watch!! You may not like his syle, but he sure puts his life in danger for the camera. Great footage and advertisment for Double rifles. I sure hope he keeps them coming. I personally hate the idea of the PH shooting your trophy, but in that situation, I dont think I would really care....
