BAIKAL SxS in Aust.
      #69966 - 22/01/07 07:31 PM

The much talked of Baikal DR SxS has arrived available in .30-06, .308 and .223.
Examined one in .30-06 at the Adelaide gun shop on Sat.
Not "too" badly finshed, be interesting to see how they shoot.

Couple of observations, the sight does not "come to the eye" as well as it might
foresight appearing to high in the V. If that makes sense.

Also I wonder if it is not a little light (in .30-06) might be a bit of a mule?
It will be of interest to see how well the regulation system holds its position.

The Remington distributers are not going to do their "spartan" version in Aust.
as they can not compete price wise with the Russians.

At around $800.00 Aust they arent going to break the bank, even if one did replace the sight
it's still not expensive. Quite tempted (with reservations LOL) for a fun gun.

Even considered getting one and seeing if it could be rechambered to .30-30 as a muck about
pig gun.

Question for the gunsmiths out there would rechambering a .30-06 or .308 to .30-30 be difficult?

TAKE a photo of the BREECH ends so we can see how much metal is in them. This will answer a few questions.

Terref:
I think you would have to chamber-sleeve to shoot the .30-30 in a .308. Not viable IMHO.

The well-known quote about silk purses and pig's ears springs to mind!

Just buy a .308 and get cracking. Don't forget to report your experiences here!

"The well-known quote about silk purses and pig's ears springs to mind!"

Very appropriate.

Question - why would you want a 30/30 instead of a 308 ?
Unless of course you like Rainbow Trajectories (not counting the Rim versus Rimless argument).

And if you want a bigger calibre, why not get a Fabarm in 9.3 x 74R ?

Am I missing something? You have the option of .308 and 30/06 and you want to rechamber to 30/30? My guess is that you could reduce the load in either of the two available calibres to approximate the 30/30 load if you wish, and of course have the regulation screw to get the thing to shoot straight.

I understand the "silk purse & sow's ear" quote but do not think it is appropriate. Please look at it for what it is; a fun double that you can use in the bush, swamps or whatever, without stressing about the gun, in an appropriate calibre for 90% of Australian and North American game.

It does not put itself out as a fine British double, please give credit when a manufacturer has the "balls" to produce a double for the masses that is affordable. Why do you choose to continually look down your nose at this gun. I thought that as a double rifle & gun fan you would welcome newbies to the fold, and who knows, after they have cut their teeth on a Baikal double they may graduate to something bigger and better.

A Baikal double in 30/06 is better than the corresponding remchester in my opinion, and as has been mentioned here before, hunting with the double does enhance the experience after all isn't hunting all about the experience?

Good luck to Baikal for going where angels fear to tread and hopefully their success spurs the other manufacturers into taking up this market. Also for what it is worth, I personally do not like O/U doubles, therefore the Fabarm is not an option (for me) even though it is an amazing value rifle.

PS.at $800-00 Iwill probably end up with one in my gun cabinet.

So what would the cost be (aside from purchase price) to import one of those to the US? What forms would one need? Would it even be worth it or would shipping and import fees make it a waste of time? Didn't someone say they were available in Canada too? What about getting one from there? There seem to be some (maybe many) here that wouldn't waste time with a $700-$800 double but if it shoots halfway decent and is put together halfway decent who cares what it costs. I've certainly have been waiting for an affordable double for a long time. This is affordable for me (or at least will be this year). I would very much be interested in one in 30-06.

I have seen the Baikal sxs in 30.06. I also found it nearly impossible to get my head down far enough on to stock aligh the sites. They are quite light for a 06 but they are quite manageable.

I have shot the over/under in 30.06 and 308 and they are quite good to shoot with regulation being no problem. The 308 appears to regulate best with 150 grain bullets and the 30.06 regulates with 165 grains. The extractors have a projection that fits into the extractor groove to pull the case out far enough to grab with the fingers. They are not quick to reload. One way of solving this problem that I have seen and it works very well is in the 308, have a recess cut for a rim and use the 307 winchester case resized in the 308 dies. For the 30.06, use 7.65 mm rimmed case, trimmed back to 63 mm, and resize in the 30.06 dies open the neck up to 308 dia. In 308, after firing, opening the gun and tip it up, the cases just fall out. I have not seen a 30.06 modification but I am aware of two that have been successfully done and used.
Another modification is taking a single trigger from a Baikal over/under shotgun and fitting it into the rifle. I have used a side a sxs 30.06 with this modification and it works well once the trigger has been worked to give a reasonable pull.

One over/under in 30.06 that I have used had the double triggers worked from 11 1/4 pounds down to 5 1/2 pounds and very crisp.

I am waiting for my Baikal Over/under in 9.3x74 which is supposed to be in by the 4th February. I am assured that there are several on there way.

I hope this helps.

My reason for enquiring re the 30-30 conversion was purely on the basis of the rim/rimless arguement and extraction....and surprise surprise it would appear that there are some extraction issues. Couldn't be bothered farting about with resizing cases and so on. So perhaps I'll go straight .308 and fiddle with the sights (if required) and see how one plays.
Very fair point by Michael... at this price these things are for knock abouts nothing more nothing less..........and who knows in the hands of people who get out and do a bit away from the rarified atmosphere of the theorists and once or twice a year folk the thing might actually prove to be a practical hunting rifle about which one doesn't have to worry too much.
Mind you it could be a complete pigs...well you know

Teref

Where did you see them for $800 ?

Also, instead of 30-30, why not just rechamber to 307 Winchester ? This goves you the RIMMED Case you were after ?

Terref and 500.

There is no need to rechamber the rifles, all it needs is a competent gunsmith to cut the rim rebate into the back of the chamber including the extractor. The indent that is fitted for rimless rounds is removed and that is it. All you then need are the new rimmed cases, shell holder to suit the rimmed case and the 308 or 30.06 dies depending on which caliber you bought.

$800.00 is very cheap. $1400.00 is what I have seen, and some places are more expensive.

I believe Mc Donald guns of Footscray, victoria, is getting five 9.3 x 74 rimmed in in Feb.

From what I have read on the Baikal site the 9.3x74R is available only in the O/U "Express" double and NOT the sxs. Hopefully they will see the light and chamber this classic round in the sxs but if they don't maybe I will have to get over my aversion to O/U doubles and get one.

Boronia Firearms are offering the 30/06 sxs double for $1,250 cased which is the best I have seen. Another gunshop close by has the same rifle for $1,750 "go figure". I guess it pays to shop around even on the bargain rifles.

Great to get reports from people who have used these guns in the field and range and also the positive feedback on the regulation screw system is encouraging.

Hi all. God I love doubles. I have several already, BPE and Nitro. About to buy a new Merkel .470 and am very interested in one of these Baikals. Tossing up between .308 and 30/06. I like teh idea of going rimmed. One day I hope to get a little .360 double in BP or Nitro, but until then, this will have to do.

I'll shop around. Thanks for some of those prices. I'm Melbourne based so they have been great.

Any body shooting a Baikal?
