375 Express Update- new photos
      #67963 - 24/12/06 08:47 AM

An update on the 375 Express project. I have been busy drawfiling and doing a bit of stoning. Here are some photos of the progress. I still have a lot of filing and stoning to do. This is a major job as I want it to be a guild quality finish. Not sure how many hours I have spent so far but needless to say a production company could have finished and blued 30 or 40 guns if not more in less time than I have in on just filing the barrel. The end result will be nice:)))) As you can see in the photos the steel is not flat. Im making progress. I have not done any recontouring of the trigger guard but will do some rounding to make it more symetrical and domed shaped as it should have been done the first time around. Still have not figured out how to arrange photos in order. As you can see some are out of order.

Thanks to Percy Olivas for the cut away drawings of the Dutch action.

CorbinS. - what case is the .375 Express going to be on? Is it the 56 or 57 or maybe the 60mm?
: I built up a 9.5x68 on the 6.5x68 and 8x68 case, about 15 ago for a friend, and now see that Hornady and perhaps Ruger are bringing it out in a factory chambing. I do not think the action you have would take that big, .522" case.

Is this the ".375 Ruger"? Or a different one?

I see the .375 Ruger has a .532 case?

Nitro-X You're right about the .375 Ruger and the .532" base diameter, rather than the 8x68's .522". I was quoting the only source I'd seen on it and that was Scovil's writeup I looked at in a grocery store - Handloader or Rifle mag.
: The only .375 Express I am aware of, as a registerd wildcat, is the .444 Marlin case necked to .375 - by Ken Waters. This cae, at 2,23" length, could also be made on 8x57 or 7x57 brass for a rimless variation. Also, there is a .375 Express, or 'Payne' Express on the .348Winchester case.
; A Water's type .375 Express using 7mm or 8 mm brass would be most similar to a 9.5x57, a standard European round.(Water's version is an improved-type case, with a .454" to .456" shoulder, standard for the Ackley Improved rounds on standard brass. The 9.5x57 has a smaller shoulder.
; Knowing Corbin to be a wildcatter - I'd guess it was the Water's version. Excellent choice, BTW, with case capcity listed as being 68.55gr. total.

Corbin:
Did you get a lot more completed over the holidays?
I am anxious to see photos of your progress to date.

Just thought I'd clear the muddy water I probably created on trying to guess which .375 'Express' was being used.
: I talked with Corbin on the phone, and the round is the .375 Nitro Express 2.5" originally chamberd in his Mannlicher.
: The 'other' Express rounds are so-named wildcats.

The correct naming would be: ".375 Flanged Nitro Express (2 1/2")". Cases can be made from .405 Basic.
It is a straight, rimmed case, introduced in 1899.

The .375 Flanged Nitro Express 2 1/2 can be made from .405 Basic but it would be simplier to just buy .375 Flanged Nitro Express 2 1/2 Brass from Bertram and Kynoch. Jamison might make it also. Bonus is the head stamp would be right.

Kynoch sells new loaded ammo.

It can also be made from 9.3x74 brass, according to Donnely's book.

Double Trouble,

Yes I did get more done over the holidays. Barrel and action are 95% polished. Bottom metal is all draw filed and partially stoned. Hang tight as I have been super busy and Im behind schedule but will put time in as I can. Will keep you posted.

I have completed my 22 as well as another 22... a double rifle and am now waiting for the gunsmith to light up his tanks and get it all blued.

I am also going to bring some titanium components to a local jeweler to have them rodium (sp) plated.

I too will let you know how they come out.
