Got a really neat little Jeffery 6.5
      #68755 - 04/01/07 12:33 PM

It's built on a Steyr action. The barrel has the Jeffery front sight and a five leaf island of gold lined flip sights numbered 1 through 5

"Sighted and shot by W.J. Jeffery & Co Ltd 13 King St, St James, London SW 21118"
is engraved on the barrel between the sling swivel band and the sight island.

The bolt is fitted for the Jeffery Patent 8872 Sight.
The peep aperture for the striker-mounted sight is missing.
So is the special hood for the front sight.

Anyone here have photos of the special peep sight and the hood?
I'll be reproducing them and fitting them to my rifle.
Also, I don't have dies, brass, or clips for the rifle.

Anyone have some of the special 5-round clips for the 6.5x53r rimmed ammunition?
A set of dies and some brass would be nice.

I'll get some photos up here soon.
I have quite a few photo requests to fulfill soon, and will try to get something up on this thread this weekend.

Sounds like a neat rifle. Do you know the year of manufacture?

500g-

No I don't.
I haven't done any research on the rifle yet at all.
Do you know the disposition of the current custodian of Jeffery records as related to leger page research requests?

The action number is 6021
The rifle's serial number (on action and wood) is 21118.
4-digit barrel number is 3618.
Nitro Proved 6.5mm
Underside of barrel shows
s
2
+.1
H
2
1
B

Note that the capital letter B is alone, not near the serial number.

There are also H-within-circle, I-within-circle, crossed banners, crown-over-V, various other assorted digits, and a +2 on the underside of the big ring of the action.

Barrel = .510'' at the muzzle, the lower portion of the magazine walls are reenforced on the outside, and the rifle has the patent sights -- of which the rear striker-mounted peep is missing parts.

Do you have images of a complete Jeffery Patent 8872 peep sight?

Paul-
Yes I did.

If you have any images of that sight I'd love to see them.
Xerox copies via snail mail would work...

I just wrangled some Krag brass, a set of 6.5MS dies and some bullets. Might get some brass formed before long and actually see how it shoots.

Tinker:
Here is the listing for Jeffery's Patent aperture sight in their 1910-11 catalogue:

Check the last line in the ad: "Jeffery's Mannlichers at 12 guineas are fitted with these sights without extra charge".

Note that there are already a couple of pics of this type of sight on NE.com, in the .416 Rigby thread on the Mauser Photos forum. Jump to it here and scroll down to the second set of photos, in MFC's post.

Allright guys-

Work's been freakin busy.
I got a couple of hours this afternoon. It was photograph the rifle for y'all or get the thing running.
I siezed the opportunity to finish up the job on some Krag brass and fiddle with some feeding issues.

The 30-40 cases got sized in a 6.5x54 FL die, took .002''ø off the base, thinned and turned the rims, and trimmed and turned the necks.
Dumped 20gr 4189 and seated 100gr spitzers, now I have some fireform loads.
I'll shoot them In the morning, anneal the necks, and start working a 160gr SNRN load to hit to the 100yd leaf.

Wish me luck.

Firing pin protrusion.
Should be one of those things a guy checks right off the getgo.

'Click'
can seem so much louder than
'Bang'

At least I could clearly tell that I have developed little to no flinch.

grrr...

Hopefully I'll either find time to repair my firing pin soon or stumble on an available spare somewhere.

Getting closer.

I got slammed by the flu this weekend, been on my back all day.
Might try to get up and tip that firing pin tomorrow.
The tool steel welding rod and tig welder are standing by.

bulldog-
I found these images of the rifle on a completed auction page on the web.
Seems it made it's way up to our part of the state fairly recently.

This flu sucks.
No energy at all.

I managed to get out to the shop and repair the firing pin night before last. Passed out and slept through most of yesterday.

Slept late today and started popping pills at around 10:00am ...

160gr at a time!

The little rifle shoots well. I'll start fiddling with load development *hopefully* this weekend and see about setting up for some proper photos of the rifle.

Still on the 'to do list' for the rifle
-ivory for front sight blade
-front sight hood
-striker peep sight parts
-rear sling swivel

This is the drawings from W.J.Jeffery's patent 8872 striker mounted peepsight.

This is how much of that sight remained with my rifle to present time.

I've been at work in the machine shop reproducing the missing parts.

It's a quick-change regulated peepsight, indexable from one click stop to the next. The patent shows a cam regulated from 100 to 500 yards in 100yd increments.

Very cool.

Anyone here ever see one in the flesh or have images of one?

I found the clips at Gunparts (Numrich). Buffalo Arms has brass which they form from 303Br.
It's listed at $32/50.
My best luck was with 34-35 gr of RL15 with the Horn 160RN.

Bulldog-

Been busy with work and family.
At this point, I've worked with the Krag brass and am moving on to .303 Brit brass. I have a set of loaded ammunition ready to go for the next time I can get out to the range.

I haven't had a lot of time to put into the sight parts, although I've made the elevation knob, the elevator post, and the aperture hood. I need to make some screws and the cam.
Haven't worked on the front sight yet, although I managed to dig some antique ivory for the front sight blade out of one of my materials bins.

I have yet to see photos of the patent peepsight or the Jeffery socket block front sight and hood. I'd really like to see proper examples before I proceed with the front sight work, I'll make due with the patent information and catalog images for the rear sight.

Time is the biggest pinch for me in the process.
Work's been busy as can be, I'm looking at a 100k sq/ft expansion in the coming few months.
We've had family in the hospital since Christmas eve and the responsibilities around that situation have overshadowed my fiddling-on-rifles interests.

Things look like they're going to clear a little for me in the coming weeks. I'll keep y'all posted on progress with the little Jeffery.
