Best barrel lenght for M-17 converted to 300 H&H?
      #68559 - 02/01/07 10:37 PM

Ok guys, you've talked me into going the conversion route with the M-17. How long of a barrel is minimum for the 300 H&H? I've read that you don't need the 26",but not seen which works best with this cartridge. Would 22" be to short?

My .300 H&H had a 26" barrel and it worked quite nicely. It never was a hinderance. Personally I would recommend a 24" minimum.

I do not see a reason for a magnum cartidge's barrel being shorter than 24". I prefer 25" personally. To me, it just 'sounds' better.

I think a 24" barrel on a bolt rifle is just about right.

Definitely no shorter than 24". Preferably 25" or 26".

My Ruger #1 in 300 H&H has a 26" tube; however the #1 action is shorter than a bolt gun, so it seems like you're carrying a 22" rifle.

Still, my handloads (and even the one or two factory loads out there, e.g., Federal 180gn Noslers) do a bit better ballistically with the 26" barrel.

I believe 24" is the minimum one should chamber any belted .30 to. I would personally prefer something in the 25" to 26" range. They balance and feel better all the way around.
: Shortening the barrel to 22", will reduce the ballistics to pretty much what a 22" barrel in .30/06 gives with 'Light Mag' and Federals increased velocity factory ammo. The only 'bigger' thing about the .300 in a 22" barrel, is powder charge. You get to burn more powder, wear the barrel faster and absorb more recoil, for little or no gain.
: In this post, I am talking about 50fps to 100fps having no increased effect on game animals - no difference on game or in trajectory that is noticable. If the truth be know, there is probably little difference between a top loaded .30/06 26" and the .300 26" as far as the game is concerned. Just an opinion, of course.

Well, even with barrels of equal length, the real difference between the 30.06 and the 300 H&H depends on bullet-weight.

With the 150gn, 165gn & 180gn slugs, there's little gain with a 300 Holland over the newer line-up of "high energy"/"light magnum"-type 30.06 loads available on the market today.

However, if you're loading .308 bullets weighing 200gns, 210gns, 220gns and on up, that's where the larger capacity case and, especially for seating purposes, the longer neck of the 300 H&H give it a very useful velocity advantage over a 30.06 trying to throw the same slugs.

In other words, if all you're going to shoot are the 180gn or lighter .308 bullets, stick with the 30.06. That's why, except for several boxes of Federal's 300 H&H 180gn Nosler load I have around here, all other loads (my handloads) are 200gns or above.

I've tested out both the heavy hunting bullets as well as the 200gn Sierra Match Kings, and this "Super .30" is accurate with all of them.

Looks like I'll be going with at least 24".Wait and see what the Gunsmith has to say upon conversion. Sasiated my short barrel fixation yesterday. Picked up a Enfield #5 MK1 sporterization in progess project.

Woodbeef,
Out of interest ... what will be done with the magazine box to fit the H&H length case? Will you be modifying the existing box, having one built from scratch or getting an aftermarket replacement? I'm interested as I'm also considering work on an M17.
Cheers...
Con

Con,as far as I know nothing needs to be done from what I've been told so far. The Gunsmith might say different though. I'll let you know when he gets it for rechambering.
