500...not sure of the exact dimension but Fuchs looked at the cartridge with some interest and commented that he could use a shorter action and that that cartridge was appealing to him from that standpoint.

500 Nitro - makes little or no difference in feel for a practised shooter.
: My ZKK's in .358 and .375, in the field feel little different than my more common 98 Mausers. You pull the bolt back, it stops, then you push it forward to chamber a round - 1 fluid motion back and forward.
: Most .375's have a bit of extra beef to them, welcomed by most, but over the years, there's been a steady push for lighter guns. Perhaps the .375 Ruger will appeal to those people. If I were to build one, it would be a normal 9-1/2 or 10 pounds with scope. My BRNO .375, at 11 pounds, loaded & with scope felt just fine, but nowadays, I do prefer the feel of a 9 1/2 pounder. That's where BoydBoys stocks come in. I would not build one on a synthetic stock.

When I heard about this rifle my first thought was it would make more sense as part of a family of rifles. For example, Ruger could come out with a Hawkeye African in .458 win mag on the same action, so somebody with no safari battery at all could get a matched pair for less than $2000. Familiarity with one would translate to the other, maybe even the scopes if one broke in the field. One in .338 win mag with the same sights would be neat and I'd probably buy that to play with before I gave it to my daughter. Under what other circumstances would a short action .375 make sense?

The Ruger folks at SCI pooh-pooh'd the idea.

Bwanaclark
the short action is appealing in the Double Barreled Bolt Action Repeater made by Szecsei/Fuchs Fine Guns as it allows for an even greater weight reduction and the rifle could potentially come in nicely under 11 Lbs.

hoppdoc,

I think I like it too, as I paid for mine two days ago and am waiting to see what I bought...the African.

As to those who talk about excessive recoil, what about the recently anointed 458 Lott?! I don't notice recoil at all when hunting, but I sure as hell feel the 10-12 pounds pushing down on my back. 8-8 1/2 would be much better, and I carry rifles just a bit more time than I spend shooting them.

Bwana...

I'd like to see it in 9,3X62. The 416 Ruger is in the works, it seems, and probably others.
