I have a new Daly Zastava M98, 300 Mag length action and want to build a 458 Lott. With proper fitting, can this action accomodate commercially manufactured 458 Lott ammo? The bolt face is cut to accept the magnum case head. After fitting, will the action be strong enough? Do I need to move up to a true magnum length action?
I guess "Plan B" is to go with the 458 Win Mag but I really want the Lott. By the way, I'm left handed so buying a commercially made rifle in 458 Lott is not much of an option. At least on my budget.

Makikng this conversion is a big deal. You will need a new longer magazine box with an internal geometry designed for the Lott round, a new follower, opening up of the action (removing some of the ramp, alteration of the rails, cutting out some of the front action ring to allow loading. All of this must be done by a gunsmith who is an expert at getting big bores to feed.
Better to sell this rifle and buy a CZ in 458 lott.

I'm in agreement there. While I know it can and has been done, I'd opt for a longer action to start with.

Can I get a left handed CZ in 458 Lott? No comments about Plan 'B'? Is the Lott so much better than the Win Mag that the latter is not a consideration?
I planned on getting a replacement drop magazine as part of the original idea. I have the action at David Gentry's shop for installation of a 3-position safety. I have heard very good things about the quality of his work. He seems to think it can be done.

Ideally, a longer action would be perfect, but again, I am limited by availability of left hand actions. I know of a place to buy a Vektor M98 lefty long action, but the price is prohibitive. At least for now. Timely delivery becomes an issue along with price when considering most of the US makers.

Coverting to a 458 win mag will be easier than converting to Lott, but I do not know if your mag box geometry is right or not. Perhaps you could load up the mag with 458 win mag rounds and see if it feeds or is close to feeding.
A LH Win M70 will convert to 458 Lott without as much difficulty.

So he has the factory load cost, full recoil for each shot since he does not reload 
I think you are safe in posting up on the single shot forum about any suggested modifications to Ruger #1s

All that 500grains said is true about the conversion. I've done a couple and they take some work but they do result in a sleek Lott package.
Another option for us "lefties" is the Montana 99, but they're getting difficult to get and although I've not seen it, several have reported quality problems with the actions they've gotten. Their long-action should easily fit the LOTT and you can use Blackburn bottom metal to get the correct geometry. I have a "99" that when I get the time will be either a 404 or a 416 Remington. I've had a drop-box triggergurad on order with Blackburn for just shy of a year and that's one reason it's not finished yet.

I hear praise for Mark Penrod in Indiana but I have not used him. Dennis Olson in Montana is good but he has a backlog of 4+ years.

Re: Win Mod 70 conversion.....500grains, are you refering to a standard length magnum (300 Win) or a long action magnum (375 H&H) for conversion? I have both, but would like to keep the 375 as is. The other is a 338 Win Mag. I like it, but would not miss it if I could get it converted to the Lott. I plan on buying new "drop" magazine bottom metal for whatever action I get.
Re: Left hand CZ in 458 Lott.....I heard from the CZ people that they plan to introduce a left hand CZ in an "African" style rifle in 375 and 458 Lott. Timing is supposed to be mid-year, '07. We will see.

WP, you can convert your .300 mag action, although it you hold it beside your .375 action, you will be able to see how the .375 has been opened a bit more for the longer cartridge. This should also be done for a 458 lott conversion or else you would need to load the gun by hooking the cartridges in, which is not something to be done in a hurry with a wounded animal running about.

I will take a look at them tonight. Sounds like you may be onto something. If it works, I can build a 338 Win Mag or a 375 Ruger on my Daly M98. Any excuse to get more guns.
Have you seen any discussion about taking the new 375 Ruger case and sizing it up to 416, 404 or even 458? Might be a research project in there somewhere.
Now, do you have any advice on how to get this one approved by the home office (translation--wife)? lol

As for modifying the 375 Ruger, you might want to compare the end result with the Dakota line of cartridges which are already established with brass, dies and ammo available rather than undertaking a new wildcat which will have limited resale value.
As for the wife, how does she know how much money you have and what you spend it on?

On the CZ i own a 458 lott i would not hunt charging chipmunks with it. after about $2500 to $3000 @the gunsmith It might be usable.
Answer I bought a double
I will report on the lott when project completes this fall. It has been at the smiths since nov last year.

Further converstaions with CZ indicate they will not introduce the left hand 550 American Safari in 458 Lott. They will bring out the rifle in 375 H&H only. The good news is the person I corresponded with (Brian via the website below) said they would sell the action to me when they come out. If this happens, I think this will be a good platform to start with for the 458 Lott. No indication of the availability or price as yet. So, I guess we will see what we will see. Who knows, I may get lucky.

The Cz accuracy was great you just cant get the rounds in or out. There is a large gap between the bolt and the action. while cocking and pulling back and up on the bolt the action binds so hard you have to smack it foward with your hand to unlock it. A fix i had found consisted of putting a bronze set screw through the rear bridge pushing down on the bolt.(Nice and classy) I had my bolt flame sprayed an built up 5 thousands. Then installed the missing mauser anti bind feature on the rear of the bolt. Next had the feed ramp reshaped so the rounds would not miss the barrell. Then the feed rails had to be cut back about 3/8 in. Remove and cover the safety hole replace with win 70 style. During rapid reload practice I was removing small chunks of flesh from my hand on it. During the same seshion stock split in 3 places and the trigger fell off. Called cz and asked if i could upgrade to a laminate they said no sorry cant help you.( love the customer service) Can I just buy a laminate stock outright answer NO. Next The last round wont feed so I bought another mag spring and am now using 2. I can continue When I calm down.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like they have some serious quality issues along with poor customer service. They must not be in business for the long haul. I was considering buying one of the left hand 375's later this year, but I think I will take a wait and see approach to this one.
When you calm down, let us know how the new and improved version shoots.
