The case sounds similar to the old .35 Newton. Very interesting.

Quote:

400,
I think the confusion about the 8x68 case is stemming from an article written by Dave Scovill in Handloader Magazine. Scovill claimed he had a case and reported its casehead measurement as .522". He also reported different shoulder and OAL measurements than Mike and I (Mike quoted what I quoted on 24Hr) above.

I'm not sure if Scovill "dry-labbed" his measurements, had a proto-type case that Hornady isn't using, the writer that passed along the info to me isn't correct or if Hornady is feeding confusing information to numerous people.

I honestly cannot see where Hornady would be using a .522" casehead, that just doesn't make sense to me. I strongly believe the writer that passed along the information to me that he got from Hornady is right, I've never known him not to be truthful or to not fully research his findings before opening his mouth. He has no reason for pomp, unlike Scovill who tried to take credit for everything under the sun, even the Barnes TSX design.

; I was referring to the Scovil article, I guess - it was the only one I saw mentioning the .375 Ruger/hornady development, in a Rifle or Handloader magazine - hense my post.

Thanks DPhillips and 400 Nitro - sometimes confusing when a new round comes out. I guess my 9.5x68mm is still my wildcat - HA! It should be a factory round, though, due to 'our' ease of making brass, not having to buy special or expensive brass.
: As to the pressure, even the lowly .260 Rem is an over 60,000 psi round - 63,000 or thereabouts. I think some people mix up the CUP/PSI numbers and since we all got used to seeing numbers in the low to mid 50,000CUP range, with some writers actually calling that pounds and now seeing actual PSI numbers over 60,000 spooks those who skim instead of reading all the words.

Yeah, I think that's probably true. The change from crusher to piezo left a lot of folks confused. Still, it's surprising how many guys don't know the standards for the cartridges they use, especially those they handload for.

Even more suprising is the number of handloaders who do not seem to realise that they control the pressure.

Right-on, Mike. Pressure is what you make it, no more, no less.
