Double Trouble,

The Wells gun shop is going to continue for the foreseeable future. One of his sons is working with Rachel and a friend of mine who is an engraver in Arizona is going to be working with Rachel on a book on Fred's creations. I hope to post details here as and when I have more information.

Cheers!

Bigdog:
I stand corrected, thank you for clarifying that. I was not aware of Frank Wells.

Mehul:
I had hoped that the business would carry on with his Family.... glad to hear it!

That book will be a slick piece,,,, Fred had some pretty wild stuff in his repetoire.

and please do post any info you have on it when you learn more.
Why am i not surprised that you know Fred and Rachel.... fine people both!

Fred was always intrigued with the Szecsei/Fuchs Double Barreled Bolt Repeater and would check up on the goings on with any new developements... it was a treat to watch him and Szecsei shoot the breeze....conversations that were far better listened to than trying to get involved in if you know what i mean... and i'm sure you do.

I recall the first time that Gerhard Fuchs met Fred and Fred complimented Gerhard on his fine workmanship after handling and critically reviewing an early production double bolt rifle. imediately after that he and Szecsei dove deep into the technical aspects of the gun and stayed hard at it for 15 or 20 minutes. shortly after Fred left to go back and man his booth, Gerhard asked me...."who was that man?...he sure knew what he was looking at"

i said that was Fred Wells... a fixture, nearing legend, amongst custom rifle makers!

In his very quiet, and unassuming way he had left a mark on a young and very skilled Austrian Master (Ferlach Schooled) Gunmith.

it was a good gathering, as were all gatherings with Fred.

sorry if I wax quixotic...as i said earlier...Fred will be missed.

I've handled rifles from every one of the makers you mentioned, Tightloop, and have underwhelmed by them all. Hill Country Rifles? Now that's a good joke.

Well, to each his own, but I have shot rifles by Purdey, H&H, Rigby, and Wesley Richards and NONE of them did anything special, and most importantly, they did nothing my own rifles could not do better for about 20% of the cost....

I have a 6PPC made by Ed Shilen that fired a 5 shot group of .119 and kills varmints as well or better than any of the HOT cartridges today...my 7X57 AO from HCR is a great walking around rifle that does better than .5 MOA...so perhaps you have lots more $$ than sense and enjoy spending it to garner Name Appeal, but I would rather use the rest of what a BEST English gun would cost to go hunting....and garner some trophies rather than the snob appeal of using any of the above mentioned English Best...

have a Great One...

Yeah, and a Ford or Chevy will probably outrun a Bentley. Some people just dream of riding in style. To each his own.
