More times than I care to remember with boar(feral pig)
Once or twice by scrub bulls and once by a fizzy scrub cow.
Almost forgot, once by a brumby stallion because I had culled a couple of his mares for dingo baits.

Back in the last century a buddy and I were hunting wild boar. What a combination we were. He was bow hunting and I was using a Thompson Contender in 44 Mag. He won the coin toss and got the first shot. We thought he missed. The hog never flinched or squeeled, just took off into the brush. We searched and couldnt find any blood. Now more sure that he missed, it was my turn.

A big feral pig crossed our path at about fifty yards. I took a quick stance and let off a shot before it went back into the thick stuff. I know it sounds terrible now; but at the time it made sense....... Atleast I knew I hit it; but I couldnt believe it didnt go down. Had "Dirty Harry" been lying to me all those years? What a fool I was, insted of using a good soft point or even a decent cast bullet, I was fooled by the hype of Black Talons. I figured if they were good enough to be put off limits for civilians they'd be great for hunting hogs.

An ugly chase later with a few more hits and I had 300 pounds of pork. My buddy was still empty so we headed back to the original area where we saw the one he missed. Now I dont pretend to know hogs well enough to recognize them on sight; but this sure looked like the same one he missed earlier. Not wanting to loose it again and fearing another run through the thick stuff, my buddy went one way and I stayed off to the side to block its turn for cover.

When he shot, I saw what must have happened the first time the arrow went straight through. The expandable tips didnt open. The pig looked at my size small friend and my XL size target, and headed straight for me. It was then that I had a good look at my spot. A bowling alley lane size clear path lead straight to me, with a dead fall tree behind me. I had just enough time to realize this was gonna hurt almost as much as my wife's "I TOLD YOU SO's".

Im not sure if I had time to remember the poor performance of the Black Talons from my earlier shots or not; but having no alternatives it wouldnt have mattered. As best I can tell I shot at about ten feet. It was like the HAND OF GOD struck it down. Finally! Thats what a 44 Magnum is supposed to do! It was dead at my feet.

As for my first pig when we found the bullets, they had done exactly like they were supposed to do. The expanded with minimal penetration and lots of sharp edges. The difference is only humans fall down and cry when they get hit, animals look for cover or attack.

I learned alot of lessons from that hunt, not the least of which are to always load with BIG solids for game that bites back.

I have been attacked by a Warthog and semi charged by a Cape Buffalo. I say semi because it started to come from maybe 40-50yds and was put down in short order so, in my mind, doesn't really qualify as a full blown charge due to the distance but I think qualifies as an "attack."

Elephants on several occasions. All but one stopped on a warning shot or lost us when we ran. I stopped the one that came all the way at seven yards. Didn't brain it, the shot was low, but was using enough gun to stop it in its tracks.

Fascinating!!

What this poll really suggests is that ALL hunters will get attacked by game if they hunt certain game or hunt big game long enough!!

Most hunters cringe at they idea of being attacked by game, indeed I bet most WOULD NOT HUNT if they knew it would absolutely occur.Takes a certain kind of fella to hunt something that will come at you!! Gives some insight to oneself, doesn't it?

Kinda also gives credence to "the most gun you can handle" concept doesn't it?

Heres a new one.We were attacked by an ostrich. It took a swipe at the vehicle with its foot and managed to put a dent in the fender.Apparently we had come close to its nest or whatever and there were chicks there. The PH told us that the bird can slash a man to death with its feet.

Hoppdoc,

FWIW, I've been charged and chased by elephant on several occations, a few while hunting and more while not, but have so far only shot one elephant. With that said, I wouldn't hesitate to use a 375H&H again. Although if given a choice, I think I would go for a slightly larger calibre. But I wouldn't go so far as to say it is absolutely necessary.

I'll also add that different people have different veiws on what an "attack" is. It appears to me from some of the posts read on various internet forums that some people think they have been "attacked" or "charged", simply because animal X happened to be trotting in their general direction from a hundred meters away. Inexperiance can then lead them to believe that they were in mortal danger, when they in fact were not.

I've been "charged" by a wounded hog deer!

Actually it wasn't charging at all, but merely running uphill directly at me after being shot. I fumbled the reload, the deer saw me and changed direction, passing a few metres from me. Crashed into the bush and died from the first shot. Had it been truly something after me, deer or not, it would have got me.

I was also "charged" by a blind rabbit too once. I side stepped it, and shot it at point blank range as it also passed.

As for "dangerous" game, a scrub bull after being shot came crashing down hill looking as if it was looking for me. I hid behind a tree and reloaded my double and shot it from behind the tree. I wonder what it would have done had I stepped out so it could see me. Either charged or run off the opposite direction.

Several elephant this year were supposed to charge but everytime they turned and ran off.

the closest I have come to being "charged" was when I jumped a bedded Mule Deer in a Nebraska milo field while on an early morning pheasant drive.

I was probably 8 or 10 yards away from this big buck when he heard me crashing through the crotch high foilage, he got up and barreled right at me and bolted right past me at arms length, cleared the cattle fence which was about 20 yds behind me like it wasnt there and then I cleaned my shorts.

I must say that the first time I quail hunted, I had the same trouser warming experience when a covey busted all around me in a Texas scrub field/pasture.... not ever having experienced how tight they hold,,,I didn't even get the safety off.

Yeah I know that neither of these episodes are as harrowing as a charge from DG but my wife doesn't... when I tell her of all the dangers I face just to put food on the table!

I was hog hunting in South Texas. We were driving from one high point to another and glassing the small drainages. We were seeing a lot of coyotes and the land owner asked that they be removed also. I was using my 308 Norma Mag KDF K-15. I loaded one magazine with 165 gr. high speed low drag varmint load and the other with Norma factory 180's.

Made a realy spectacular long range shot on a coyote sneaking away from us in the bush like he thought nobody had seem him.

We move onto to the high ground and got out and started walking to the vantage point. We had walked about 15 yeards when a big boar came busting out of the bush running quartering away about 10 yards. I took aim just behind his near leg aiming so the bullet would come out in front of his far leg and go through the heart in between.

At the shot I heard the wack. The hog spun in circles then stopped and came straight at me. I fired into his head and dropped him in his tracks...dead about 5 yards away! I added the remaining two rounds from the magazine. Dropped the empty magazine and load the second Magazine with the proper Factory 180's in the gun.

The hog had a massive wound in his side right behind the leg that had barely penetrated the chest cavity. When caped out three neat little holes were found on the front of the skull where the bullets went in the brain without exploding. All four shots were the 165 gr Varmint loads.

That hog was listed for several years as the N0.9 hog in the Record Book of Exotic's top 10 taken with a Handgun. When I told the Record book people it was listed wrong, they wanted me to pay another application fee to correct the listing. Forget it!

Moral of the story go coyote hunting or go hog hunting, don't do both, or if you do use the bullet for the meaner game for everything

I've been attacked by an unwounded Whitetail Buck during the rut, on a game reserve where I used to guide, a wounded Mule Deer Buck, also during the rut, in British Columbia, and by a rabid ground hog while hunting small game.

In 63 yrs of hunting, I've been charged exactly two times! Once by a wounded badger, who put me on top of my 4x4 , and a cape buffalo who charged from close range, and took two rounds from me, and two from my PH before going down at 5 steps from us both!

I've had many bluff charges from everything from saddle horses, to elephant, and they are frightening, but usually only as I said a bluff!

I don't think anyone should turn down a hunt in Africa, for even Buffalo or lion, because of the chance of getting a full charge! It certainly doesn't happen very often, except on one of our TARZANESK PH's films!
