CaptCurl - Question about your Merkel
      #66789 - 11/12/06 12:52 PM

Roscoe:

I hope all is well and life continues to be good in the VA mountains.

Over Thanksgiving, while back home in PA, we took the guns to the range.

Shooting 116 grains of RL15 in 40 degrees F as opposed to 120 grains of RL15 in 100 degree weather is A LOT more pleasant in my .577!

Anyway, this was the first time since August when I got to shoot my .500 NE Merkel for an extended period. During the shooting session I put about 12 rounds down range and noticed that out of those six 2 shot groups, the safety on the Merkel with switch to "SAFE" after the first shot (Right barrel) on four occasions.

If my memory is correct, you had a similar problem with your Merkel. If so, was there a reason for the rifle to click to "SAFE" after the first shot? Did you get yours repaired?

(To note, JJ [at Champlins] did install a recoil reducer in the butt, but on previous shooting session, the rifle did not switch to "SAFE" before.)

Hi Paul,

Likewise, I hope all is well with you.

Yes I have had problems with the recoil of my .500 jarring the safety on. It's really disconcerting, and I think it would be dangerous in a tight situation.

I sent it to GSI for repair, and it was supposed to be fixed . . . but it wasn't. The problem continued.

This past summer, rather than box it up and send it back to GSI, I took it apart myself and added some tension to the little flimsy leaf spring that holds the safety in position. I figured I had nothing to lose, since that spring would need to be replaced in any event, should my repair fail. Fortunately, my repair job has held so far.

The root of the problem is the little leaf spring. It's far too light for a .500NE. To properly fix the problem a new, heavier spring should be installed in its place.

Good luck with the fix. I think GSI should be happy to fix it. Let me know what you do and how it works out.

Best,
Curl

Over the weekend some friends and I shot the Merkel 470s and twice the safty was swiched on after the first shot. We felt it may have been the way my two friends where holding the rifle but now i'm not to sure.
This is the first time we had this happen in my friends Merkel and it has not happened in mine.
Great rifles otherwise.

Clark, I have a 470NE 140-2 safari double, and I have not had any problem with the safety, though the recoil is fairly heavy with my handloads! I also have a Merkel 140E 9.3X74R with an auto safety, and though the recoil is much lighter, I haven't had any issues with that safety either.

I've had the 9.3 for five years, and the 470NE for two years, with absolutely zero problem from either of them! That isn't to say I won't have a problem in future with one or the other, but not so far!

Thanks, Mac.

I'll have it at the DRSS hunt next month and we'll see if it keeps doing it at that time.
