BigFive has gone and done it!
      #6676 - 09/01/04 03:03 AM

BigFive has gone and done it!

He sent me a PM and advised me he has made a fateful decision. A serious one that could mean the end of his hunting days, no more rabble rousing at the pub, no longer being able to go home smelling of cigars. No more risking his life hunting with a difficult Aussie hunter.

He has announced to me, he is attaching a ball and shackle to his ankle, perhaps both ankles at the end of January. He is getting married!

But NO, he advises Miss Five, soon to be Mrs Five (or Ms Five ?) is also a huntress. Perhaps a whole herd of Little Fives hunting oneday.

I would like to congratulate BigFive on his upcoming wedding and wish him and his bride all the best.

Instead of getting married again I'm just going to find a woman I hate and give her a house. Can't remember who said it but it speaks for millions.

Something was waving its huge long trunk around on this honeymoon and in the dark was mistaken for an elephant charge

Not really serious but very exciting for me but a bit nerve wrecking for the wife.

We drove on a dirt road in the Kruger Nat. Park on our way back to the gate between Lower sabi and Crocodile Bridge.Looking more into each others eyes than on the road we came around a turn/bend and all of a sudden it was just elephants running all over the show.In the park you are totally defenceless because obviously no fire arms is allowed in the park.Obviously we startled the elephant and they only ran for about 100meters and turned around. There were about 15 elephant to my left and about 40-50 on my right. At this stage my newly wedded wife was clinging to my arm I turned the vehicle around because elephant browsing along the road towards us blocked me from getting past.
Reversing to get closer for a pic the matriarg mock charged and stopped about 30meters from us turned around and joined the herd.At this stage my wife was mentioning stuff about divorce .The ones behind us in the road came a bit to close and I moved a little forward to stay clear of them.I told my wife to keep an eye on the couple behind us and I'll watch the bush.At this stage we could'nt see the main herd anymore but I could hear them breaking branches as they fed.I also smelled them so I figured they were closer than 100meters.All of a sudden the matriarg burst out of the thick bush about 15meters or so behind us from an angle with trumpeting and the rest of the heard on her ass clearing what ever bush was in their way.Lucky for us I left the 4x4 at home and went on holiday with my new Renault Megane with a nippy 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds.I sped away just in time as the cow was snorting a kinds of fluids on my rear window. They followed for about 200meters and gave up the charge.

Funny to say that my closest encounter with a charge was out game viewing and not hunting.

PS.She made me promise not to get that close to elephants ever again. And I added except if I have my .460 WBY Mag with me.

Enjoy married life, it is better than you think, I was married 20 years a week ago and we are still having fun. Watch out for the kids, both my kids hunt with me, it becomes expensive, What the hell it is nice to share things in the family.

Best wishes for a long and happy married life.

Congrats Bigfive. Sounds like you have yourself a keeper. It's never too early to start rifles for the kids. I just finished a 6.5x55 for my Grandson's second birthday.
