BEST SCOPE /STOCK FIT on a Double Rifle
      #66513 - 07/12/06 01:55 PM

Ignorant question---

How does Chapuis of other DR makers design the stock for a Double that may also be scoped?

Do they use a lower comb height for best open sighted fit or do they compromise on this so that no marked head bobbing is needed to find the best scope picture.

It would seem relativelty hard to design a decent stock fit when the open sight plane is ~1.5 inches below the sight plane of a scope.

Am I off base or cofused?

Thanks to forum members for any input here.

Good question.

My limited knowledge is with Chapuis here, so my comments may have limited utitlity for Merkel and others. In short, if you buy a "standard" scoped DR from Chapuis, Merkel, etc. it will have the drop at comb for iron sights, NOT the scope. For example on my 9.3 Chapuis I had to add a leather comb raiser so the scope comes up "naturally" rather than me having to raise my head off the stock:

Now if you were to order a "made to measure" rifle from Chapuis or other makers they could make the stock fit for you with the scope that you asked them to mount on it. I know with Chapuis you can specify measurements of wood, and so this is theretically possible. But in all honesty in all the driven hunts I've been on in Europe where both O/U and SxS DRs are used often with types of holosights, most of the guys used similar comb raising devises so getting this done does not seem to be that common. Again, I could be wrong here.

The stock on my 9,3 Chapuis UGEX, no cheekpiece, the factory stock is perfect for a scope in the Chapuis pivot mounts. I have to cheek the stock hard to use the iron sights.
Works perfect for me.

Tony,

Interesting. When yours was made/ordered was it ordered with the scope done "in house" by Chapuis?

Just curious. I put the scope on mine "after sale".

Thanks!

If a double has a scope fitted in QD mounts and the intention is to shoot it with either the open sights or with the scope, the rifle should be stocked for the open sights IMO.
High combs meant for scope shooting often cause shots to go too high when using the open sights.

I had to have the stock "cheek piece" (even if there isn't one ) trimmed on my Chapuis (UGEX). It was too low for natural scope use and too high for open sights. It was a lousy compromise for me. I shot it for a while as delivered, but the pain in my cheek bone when using open sights quickly convinced me to go find a pro to trim it down. Like 450No.2 I'm using a lace on pad that I can quickly remove if need be. Right now my problem is either a bum scope, or a bum trigger man behind the stock. When I first got it, 2 ea. lefts and rights (S&B factory) would print into < 1" @ 100 yds, benchrested. Right now it appears to print pretty much anyplace (same ammo) in an 8" circle @ 100 yds. I'm going to head out to the range again in the next few days and shoot it with scope, and without scope, and perhaps with a second scope to try and figure out what is going on.

The EAW swing mounts were delivered with the rifle. The rifle has "blanks" in the rib for the EAW bases (at least the UGEX has, I can't speak to the larger framed rifles), so putting a scope on the rifle is not a major problem. Pilgrim

Pilgrim,
Please let us know how this turns out.

My own experience with the EAW swing mount is that they often need to be fine tuned to work properly.
Once set up correctly they can work very well.

My Chapuis is factory stock, I mounted the scope on it after the sale. The leather "thing" I have on the stock is a buttstock shell carrier from Murray leather. It does not raise the comb of the stock any more than just the thickness of the leather, ie very little.

4seventy - Will do. I may be able to get out tomorrow if the weather cooperates. I'm a wuss for sure. When it's below freezing and a wind is blowing, it's just miserable, at least for me it is. I shoot for fun & enjoyment, so.........Pilgrim
