Merkel regulation device, good, bad, ugly?
      #66361 - 05/12/06 06:52 AM

Anyone of you fellows have any experience with the doubles Merkel made that had a gizmo built in to alter regulation? I'm aware they exist but would like to know if it works, if it maintains regulation once set, and if it's cosmetically unobtrusive (ugly)? Thanks

Otto

Hi Otto ! I don't know about the regulating device used by Merkel, but since I made the terrible and expensive mistake of buying a Krieghoff double with a comparative device, I can tell You to take care, at least my double was a piece of crap. The regulation with this regulating device is switching all the time, propably because of the moon phase, Dow-Jones or whatever reason, but wounding game with such a gun is a experience I do not recommend, because there is no one to blame but You, the owner of a inferior weapon. After this experience I am dreaming of a Heym 88B, which has a rather proven reputation.

Wicked good hunting !

I would think that these guns must be like cars, some love Fords and some love Chevy's.
I own a Krieghoff with barrels in 7x65R and 9.3x74R. I have adjusted the barrels and never had them move again. I don't reload and continue to try different factory ammo. When I find one that works I simply adjust the barrels and forget it. I can move them minutely and never have them move again. If yours continue to move you might think to send it back for an adjustment. But you said your getting rid of it so that would be useless.
My Valmet and Krieghoff both are capable of moving point of impact and neither has ever given me a bit of trouble.
Just my humble opinion.

I've had the same experience as Kalunga, and avoid adjustable wedge guns. NitroX had a problem with an adjustable wedge gun on safari. Just something else to go wrong - not what you want in a double.

Foxfire, of course I tried at first to get the double fixed at the Krieghoff factory, which is just one hour away from my home, but I had trouble with that gun several times and so lost confidence in it. Besides being badly regulated,factory-damaged screws at the mount, nickel-plating on the action coming off and totally unacceptable accuracy ( 8cm at 100m, right barrel only ! ), the arrogant behavior of the guys at Krieghoff gave me the rest : never again ! Now I am happy there is a forum like Nitroexpress where I can get informations to prevent this desaster happen again.

Wicked good hunting !!!
