New rifle
      #6613 - 07/01/04 03:00 AM

Im thinking of getting a new rifle. I like a ,270 but also like the 25/06.

I like the 25 witha 90 grain at 3500 fps. The 270 only shoots a 100 grain at 3300 fps so isnt as hot.

Varminting, pigs, deer if I can.

Anyone had one and can tell me about it?

I'm not sure what the atraction is to high velocity. In the long run it ruins meat and the down range trajectory isn't all that different than, say, 2900 fps.

That being said I love the 270. It was the second rifle I ever owned, my Grandfather gave me an old 30-30, and the first one I ever bought with my own money. That was 40 years ago and I still have it and still use it.

It is my main Deer Rifle and was my Elk rifle until it failed one time on a Bull quartering away at 150 yards or so. I finally got the animal, 4 hours and 2 miles away. Since then I have used a 340 WB and a 9.3x74 R.

I use 130s for Deer and was using 150s for Elk. I tried the 100s on Sage Rats but why put up with the noise and recoil when a 223 or 22 will do just as well.

Duc, where are you from?

Given that it seems you want an all around gun for varmints, pigs and deer I would go with the 270 Win. Speer makes a 90 grain .277 dia bullet if you want to shoot a fast bullet. If you really want a fast gun for varmints then I would step down to something like 22-250 or 22PPC. But if your looking for a great all around rifle the 270 Win is tuff to beat.

Hi Duco:

Go with my new favorite caliber for PA Whitetail deer, the 270 WSM... A 130 grn bullet at 3350 FPS hits deer like the Hammer of Thor.

My Winchester Model 70 SS shoots the Factory 130 grn ballistic tips, 140 grn fail safes and the new 150 grn Ballistic Tips all sub moa in factory ammo. This rifle may be a fluke but I call it a boom flop round. The rifle go's boom and what ever it hits folps to the ground.

I really, really like this caliber.

Regards Jim P.

the 25-06 and 270win are the two most under--served calibers for available ammunition IMO (well, at least related to the number of rifles sold in those calibers)...

the 25-06 is a great great round, and to me, there isn't anything that I would shoot with a 270 that I wouldn't shoot with a 25-06. that said, you're likely better served with a 30-06 and a 22PPC or similar varminter... the 30 is the best all-around loading on the planet in my opinion, and will be ample medicine on any real "Game" animals you come accross...

there are only two classes of animals that the 25-06 and 270 are really better than the rest... pronghorn and sheep... unless you are hunting those, there are better choices.

Do yourself, and the deer and pigs you'll shoot a big favor...use 120's in the 25-06! the smaller bullets are for varmints, not big game.

I used a 25/270 ICL for about 15 years and will tell you that it is a bit irresponsible to shoot deer sized animals with anything smaller than 115-120 grain bullet of good design and construction. Pigs need even more penetration than deer...use Nosler 120's or similar. Run them out around 2,900-2,950 fps.

Agreed.

I'd load up some Nosler Partition 120s.

I shoot 117gr hornady btsp "custons" in my 25-06, and they seem to work quite well... problem being that the stinking thing doesn't shoot straight...

Are you "stinking" up the rifle, or is it "stinking" up your shooting...???

I like the 270 better for big game...A 160 gr. Nosler works well for elk, and 130s are great on deer...but my actual all time love is the 30-06, it will just about do anything that any of them will and then some..

I don't think any of them are small varmint rifles, too much recoil for extended shooting all day long on prarie dogs or rock chucks, I like a 222 for that..

Personally I go for a 7mm Remington for deer and use a 223 or 243 for the varminting and pig hunting. I use a 150gr nosler red tip for deer, a 64gr JSP on a 223 for pigs and similar, for anything smaller (ie rabbits, foxes, cats etc) i go for a 55 grain balistic silver tip.

it's good if you've got the money, if you dont then overall i would go for the 270.

Personally I would stick with my 6.5 x 55 and 129 grn bullets. Pretty much do everything out to 300 yards of more.

Gibbs505,

That is what I would go with as well; split the difference. The 6.5x55 is one of the most accurate chamberings out there but I would use 140 gr bullets. Go to www.accuratereloading.com/65smauser.html and check out what kind of groups are possible. This round has no problem taking game as big as moose.

In reply to:

its the rifle... or at least the scope... I shoot better groups with open-sighted rimfires that are 70 years old...

more to the point... I shoot groups about half the size with a 30-06.... pretty sure its not me.

at a minimum, the 37lb trigger-pull is a bit of an issue...
