Went for a walk
      #65744 - 12/11/06 12:24 PM

The new job's kept me away from anything but the labratory and my bed. What little waking time I've had away from home lately's been spent with my little 16-month old daughter (who is just amazing by the way!)

I needed time alone away from work and from home.
Got in the truck a couple of mornings ago and went for a drive north, got out to stretch my legs before the sun came up and heard the clicks, whistles, and bugling of Elk.
There were fifteen or so elk in a clearing, these critters were 275 yards away and looked up at the sound of my camera's shutter.

There was very little available light, the image of the elk was taken at ISO 800 with a 200mm prime set at f2, 1/6 second handheld with my elbows resting on my knees.

The shed on the water was taken an hour or so later in the morning.

I was interested in taking a pig, and had my .458 with me. The only pigs I saw were huge, 300+lb pigs and I decided to leave them there as I wanted a small one for meat and the monsters looked like more work than I wanted to deal with on my own.

The time out was well spent, no meat in the truckbed on the way home, but that wasn't really what I was after.
I'll be back, and plan to get into the drawing for a special hunt elk tag...

Digital.
Eos1D/Nikkor200-f2 hacked with one-off billet breech end.
Nice rig, heavy as hell, great performance in the dark.

Nice one, mate. Awesome photos.

I take it the pigs were feral? A less-conservative hunter might have decked one anyway and taken what meat he could carry.
The remainder of the carcass would simply fatten-up the rest of the mob for next time!

Sadly, it is dangerous to eat feral pork in tropical Australia, too many nasty diseases and parasites. I take it you have no TB,
brucellosis, sparganosis, Q-fever, kidney-worm, etc in your local wild pigs, Tinker?

Also, once you've seen a big boar reverse out of a week-dead horse carcass, in which he was feeding up to his flank, covered
in maggots and putrid juice, you'd never eat field-shot pork again.

(I got him by the way, with a Davies Aztec broad-head, but couldn't even muster the courage to retrieve my shaft! Boy, that
was special, that!)

Here's the results of my walk last Sunday, BTW. I took the tusks, but they were small considering the ~120+ kg size of the
animal. My hunting buddy got a similar one too.

Hope you are successful with your elk tag, Tinker. Look forward to the photos!

Feral indeed.

Rowdy coastal wild pigs can be good eating, although we do need to take precautions with our local swine too.
The little ones are typically sweet and tasty.

I'll keep the camera at the ready on the next outing

Tinker

Pigs, elk and probably fish in that stream.

I think you have a winner of a spot for a walk from time to time.

Very very nice indeed.

My ventures into digital been mostly point and shoot. I have a Cannon A620 which pretty good, but untill I can get a Nikon digital SLR for under $1000, this will do.

At least it has appature and shutter priority modes. With a SLR I almost always use AP, but with these point and shoots it's SP becase I cant hold the darn thing steady.

Dude, that's a long walk from Oakland! I'm originally from the Bay Area and don't see sights llike that unless I'm willing to drive for hours to get away.

Yes, that's a darn near three hour drive
Not a problem though when it's dark out and the few others out there on the road are behaving themselves. That's why I typically get out for such trips on weekdays
I too am native of the Bay Area, except for the elk, there are lots of opportunities to get the kind of scenery shown there.
Scouting hunting grounds was on my agenda though and my interest is up for more of what I saw.

How's your neck of the woods treating you?

Only reason I'm out here in nowhere is that it's quiet and lots cheaper to live out here. Plus, I don't hear errant rounds being sent off to the middle of nowhere from drive-by's and from the other REALLY FINE CITIZENS down in Oakland.

I was in Santa Monica a few months ago, and my wife has come up with a new name for ambulance/police sirens: "LA Alarm Clocks". Never seem to fail around 4:30-5:00 a.m. every morning, we'd get woken by sirens.

Aw, that's nuttin'. It's the ricocheting rounds impacting on the walls of your building or through your windows that realllly gets exciting.

I have to all the way to the Colorado countryside to enjoy and get away. The mountains are great!!.The weather is fickle but its relaxing to get into the mountains and hunt/scout.In Alabama its all mostly flat except in the NE part of the state.

Hoppdoc,

I too am a great fan of western Colorado.
Your photos make me feel "right there".

Can you tell me where the photos were taken? I have
covered many of the highways and byways of that state, and
your photos have a look of familiarity.

Unfortunately, Colorado is one of the states that is
being "loved to death". It has changed quite
significantly in the 24 years since I first went there to
hunt elk.

This was a view about 5 miles west of the hiway between Rifle and Meeker. ??Hiway 13.

Lovely country when you get into the mountains and the tree line. The air is sweet, clean, and pure. You can see for miles and miles.
