Books on Double Rifles?
      #65416 - 07/11/06 10:41 AM

Is anybody aware of a book exclusively on double rifles? I seem to recall seeing one advertised at some point but can't remember when or by who. I'll never be able to afford a fine English or European double but at least enjoy reading about the various makers and variations. Thanx.

"Shooting the British Double Rifle" by Graeme Wright is the bible for shooting and reloading double rifles. I would start there.

There are literally dozens of books on Double Rifles.

I suggest for a starter you try Gray's "Hammerless Double rifle" for an overview on Double Rifles.

Michael McIntosh, "Big Bore Rifles"

"Shooting Field" Holland and Holland

There are many other fine books and you can get as technical as you would like to get but I think these will get you a basic introduction and are all interesting reads.

What about Mark Sullivan's book on hunting with double rifles?

Oops - sorry I mentioned it.

I've been trying to get a copy of Gray's book for over 12 months!!

Been out of print for several years, some very small out of the way bookstores MAY have a copy but supplies are extremely scarce hence the 'blackmarket' prices.

I even contacted Wolfe Publishing who originally produced the book, suggesting that with such strong second hand prices perhaps a reprint might be in order... but they were very vague and non-committal.

Something strange going on here... maybe some issues between publisher and author

Cheers

TM

Just did a search on Amazon. Here are three available:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/1879356287/ref=dp_olp_2/104-0310858-4263144

Maybe I can be enticed to part with my copy.

Ye-a-a-h... the one for $1,713.44 makes the other two seem like a bargain at only $750 and $800

This book must be *seriously* good for people to pay even a tenth of these prices second hand... guess it is an example of pure economics in action...

Perhaps someone could don white acid-free cotton gloves, open their own copy (in a humidity and temperature controlled environment, of course) and let me know a summary of the contents?

Cheers

Damn, even at $750 there is better investment money to be made out of DR books than the DR's themselves!

I guess all the DR "collectors" just have to have the library as well, no matter what the price.

Heres a bit of an opinion; BUT I for one am sorry I wasted my money $150.oo(US) on The Express Rifle by Saul Bracess.

Its advetised in the Double Gun Journal, so I thought it might be worth the money. Its a large format like Mark Sullivan's book, more of a coffee table size book. The size limited me to reading it only at home. I find it difficult to carry something that big around for casual reading.

When it arrived, I eagerly opened the box only to find half the book is in Spanish, and the half that is English is a poor translation. It does have a decent amount of photos; but due to the pages being split in half (Spanish/English), the photos dont seem to be in sequence with the text. The English captions are even worse than the text tranlations.

Even setting aside the translation issue, its not a $130.oo book. Take away the extra pages for the translation and you have approxiamently 50 pages.

If you like pictures and read Spanish like a native, buy it; but I keep thinking about all the ammo I could have bought........

The book you choose depends a lot on what info you seek.

If you are primarily interested in how DRs are built, Gray's book is good. Also on that topic there are books about double shotgun production with great crossover information. Try F.LLi Piotti by Marco Nobili. Piotti makes their shotguns just like the Brits did in the years before WW2 - no CNC, just hand machines and hand work. This book details the progress of production from raw steel and wood to the final work of art, with a lot of photos along the way. I know of no book with such a clear exposition of hand-made double gun production.

If you are interested in classification of makers and dates of production you should get the two volume set British Gunmakers by Nigel Brown.

There are various works about specific houses of gunmaking such as Purdey, H&H, etc. if your interests lie with specific makers.

I recently read Shotgun Technicana by Michael McIntosh and David Trevallion. There is some great information there, and a lot of crossover to DRs.

I really don't know of a work that covers all areas of interest.

Me too! I've even gotten a letter from the people who do the Trophy Room annuals, offering me $300 US for my first issue, which is also in new condition!

I wish I'd known this when I bought these two books, I'd have bought a dozen copies!

Whewww...I finally got my memory re: passwords, e-mail addy, etc all sorted out. Now I can at least throw a few words from a neophyte into the mix!

I have Grays book, Wolfe pub. 1994. I noted above that the Wolfe release was the 1st. Does this make any difference in value? How would one go about selling the book? It is essentially pristine, read once very very gently.

In addition to John Taylors books and the others mentioned above take a look at "The Rifle, Its Development for Big-Game Hunting" by S.R. Truesdell.

A lot of good info from people that used double rifles.

Also "Months of the Sun" by Ian Nyschens.

And "Shoot Straight and Stay Alive" by Fred Bartlet

If you look hard enough, they are available at not unreasonable cost. I got a copy of "Shooting the British Double Rifle" by Graeme Wright locally last year and recently found a copy of Gray's "Hammerless Double rifle" from a book seller in the US - I guess the weak dollar helps

There is a copy of Gray on ebay for $650 at the moment, but it doesn't look in such great condition. Anyway, its a hell of alot more than I paid for mine, so persistence pays off in the end!

Although not specifically DR's, I am currently reading Safari Rifles by Craig Boddington which seems to have some good info combined with some good game pics.

All the best Ian.
