Photo Request .....Lets see your Doubles !
      #65090 - 02/11/06 07:44 AM

Perhaps this is a rash "newbie request" BUT I would love to see some of the Board members double rifles! I think they are all works of arts and should be "showed off!" * Post those pics.....working rifles are VERY welcome: Searcy, Chapuis, Blaser, Merkel, Heym, etc.

Finally figured how to post pictures of THUMPER 2-
It is a Merkel 500 NE and it opens a can of WHUP *SS on me with every shot!! "OUCH!!" Not a 577 or 600 or 4 bore but it works great for me.
And yes those are claw mounts present, but I doubt I will ever use a scope--- indeed, remaining conscious after shooting is always a priority!!

Here's a shitty photo of the Big Bitch, my B. Searcy & Co. .577 NE 3".

I have some other photos on CD, but am too lazy to get them loaded into photobucket.

Here is a photo of the bottom of the action after the engraving was finished, showing my favorite part of the engraving.

hoppdoc:

I handled your .500 shortly before you bought it. Chris had it at the last DRSS event. It's a particularly nice Merkel. I thought the claw mounts nicely done.

I was fortunate to work a deal with Chris and get the Merkel.
The gun is GREAT! It handles, balances, and swings much better than a 470. I think it to be the best fit for the action/barrels used fo Merkels DR.If you want to swing a deal on a Double-contact Chris-- he will help work a deal if at all possible. He is a a real professional and very knowledgible about DR's. Nice fellow.

I am going to hunt wild pigs with it in Florida in the next several months Can't wait to bang on a boar! Then AFRICA when I can hoard away enough coins.

Sounds like a Blast!!

500's are tough fun. Dunno about a 577-

Bet I would need some advil and some pain meds if I ever shot the "Big Bitch" though-- and as others might say--It would surely be a religious experience.

Nah, if you can handle the .500 Merk, Clark's .577 won't hurt you any. It's about three pounds heavier. Not sure I'd want to try it from the bench though.

HoppDoc,

Have you tried a NFB load in your 500? Woodleigh makes a 440 grain soft that should shoot nicely in you double. You could then use the scope.

Bonanza--

Beautiful rifles!! Almost too stunning to hunt with!!
Such firearms define a commitment to hunt with the very best.
Bet they have great stories to tell.

Thanks for the info on the lighter bullets.
I will look into the 440 grain bullets. I don't know if a scope will work with both barrels when it is regulated for 570's at 50 yds. It is worth playing with though.

Hoppdoc
I too handled and shot your 500 at the DRSS Shoot. It is very nice, one of the nicest Merkels I have seen.

The claw mounts were well done.

I highly recommend you try some of those 440gr bullets over the same powder charge that works with the 570's as well as Nitro For Black loads with the 440's and IMR 4198.

I would not shoot that double with a scope with full power loads, but I think with loads that have less recoil it would be just the ticket for deer and pigs with a scope.

James Purdey 369 NE I owned this gun for a while and ended up selling it to a dealer due to my westley droplock fetish. Enjoy!
