Beavertail forends ???????????????
      #6506 - 04/01/04 01:54 PM

I posted this picture of a Westley Richards double rifle.

Now for the life of me why does anyone want a lump of wood like that on a fine swinging double?

What caliber is that one? I have a Beavertail on my 577 Thys. If you are planning on shooting allot it will keep your hands from getting burnt.

Nitro,
Yeah, I don't much like the look or feel of 'em either.
I think maybe some dudes did not like the feel of the barrels on splinter forend doubles as they were used to shooting bolt guns with forends that filled the hand.
Also as Mick said maybe barrel heat has something to do with it.
In 40 deg C, just carrying a double exposed to direct sunlight can make the barrels pretty darn hot.
I remember culling 14 goats (rapid fire ) for a property owner in south west Queensland in January heat with a 360 No2 and my left hand was smokin'!
I've only ever shot one double with a beavertail and it was a Jeffery 400. It was also the very first double that I had fired. I think that was a tad over 20 years ago.

I'm sure they are functional and some folks like them. Ithink they are standard fare on Chapuis. I personally like the splinter forearm.

I find them clubby but have never seriously used them, always having had the slimmer forends.

Seriously for a .577 how many shots are you going to fire to make the barrels that hot???

I usually shoot about 12 or so off of the bench to get warmed up. Then another dozen or so off hand for practice. Then I run through the bushes screaming for 1 mile, also for practice.

I think the Beavertail is just togive you more to hold onto. A lot of Euro shotguns have them, like full length stocks they seem to serve no particular purpose, although a well done one feels fine.

I have one on my 577 because, well just because.

My Chapuis 9.2x74r has a semi-beavertail one and I actually like, and am unsure how I would shoot with a splinter. Even though I do prefere a spinter on a SxS shotgun. When I practice I shoot about 20 rounds in a session and in the summertime I don't feel like holding on to hot barrels (yes I do let it cool in between sets). I do agree that they do look a little out of place on "classic British" rifles, but since I'll never be able to afford one, I guess I don't think about it too much... On continental guns, I think they look alright.

A serious question I would have for splinter forend shooters is does holding on to the barrels affect accuracy at all? I'm not sure this would matter on older British big bores, since you're probably shooting at less than 100 yards, but what on more accurate doubles? My 9.2 does 1-1/2 to 2" 4 shot groups at 100 yards, so I would imagine holding on the barrels would have some effect? Or am I mistaken?

Thanks!

Chasseur, you are incorrect! Touching the barrels with you hand will have zero effect on the accuracy. The forestock is, unlike a bolt rifle, tied dirrectly to the barrels anyway, and barrel hormonics are not involved it the accuracy of double rifles, but they must be allowed to recoil freely, as if standing, and holding the rifle with both hands, shoulder, and cheek! because they are tied together fastly from chamber to muzzle, hormonics are not involved! What does effect the accuracy of a double is letting the fore end rest dirrectly on a sand bag, or pushed up against a tree for a rest.

The intent of the Beavertail forend on a double shotgun is to avoid the heat generated in the barrels for things like compition, or driven bird shoots, where a hundred rounds are sometimes fired before letting the barrels cool. The, absolute, only value of the BT on a double rifle would be for CULLING, but even then one can always wear a glove on the left hand.

I, personally, do not like the way they look, and I have re-shaped many BT foreends on shotguns to splinter form. Two or three times I've been turned off double rifles, and did not buy because they had ORIGENAL beaver tail fore ends, and I did not want to change anything on a collectors item, but could not suffer that block of wood under the barrels!

Dugaboy,

Thanks for the correction. Now that I think about it, and look at my double what you wrote makes perfect sense (too much reading on bolts I guess affected me). Its good to know and will have a positive affect on my shooting I tink, knowing that contact with barrels will not effect the accuracy.

However, I don't know what the problem is with slim beavertails, I think they look nice enough. TO each their though on looks.
