KEN OWEN 4-BORE
      #64975 - 31/10/06 02:08 PM

I guess I just can't stand Safari Kid having all of the cool stuff. I have ordered a 24" barrel left handed 4-bore from Ken Owen. A really big commitment for me, but I WANTED it. It will have a little basic engraving and a color case hardened frame. Tom, you are a really bad influence on the rest of us! I guess as long as I am going to be broke for sometime, it might as well be for something I really like. The gun is 15-18 months away and I am still really looking forward to getting it. Not the most important thing in the world but it keeps my mind occupied, anyway.

Congrats!!!!!

Please keep us posted on your gun's progress(with pictures, of course). Ken's rifles look 1st class all the way. With 12 months to wait you have plenty of time to build up a callus!

If all goes well, I hope to be shooting it by next Feb. Gives me a little time to come up with the rest of the $funds$.

Are you going to shoot round ball, or conical balls in your new plinker? Rifled, or smooth? What action?

If you are shooting it by Feb, that means Ken has the fastest turnaround in the gun industry! Please be sure that your health and disability insurances are in force before pulling the trigger.

The bullets are 2000 grain and made by naval ordinance. They make a solid, a bonded thick jacket soft point, and a a thin jacketed soft point. The barrels are rifled.

500 grains, The gun won't be ready until about Feb. of 08, not Feb. of 07, I wish. The gun will weigh about 27 lbs with the 24" barrels. I doubt it kicks alot more than my 17 lb 700 Searcy, but we will see. Tom looks like he handles his pretty well. I am shorter than him, but I weigh more. Not sure this helps any with recoil. Sometimes thin guys seem to roll with heavy recoil better than me. I tend to absorb it more. Ouch!

Ken

Sounds like your getting into an arms race with Tom!!!

Can't blame you though, seeing the hole those 2000 grainers made in that buff is compelling stuff.

Did you ever get your O.K, i think it was due around August time, if so how are you finding it and how does it compare to your .700 in recoil handling?

JTOM.,
I got the 600 OK, but I sent it back to add some weight. It did weigh 12 lbs, now it weighs 13 1/2 lbs. Since I want to be able to shoot the 900 grain bullets at 2400 ft/sec I wanted a little more weight, so I do not get beat up too much. ED sent me a couple of boxes of "milder" bullets at 2200 ft/sec to try first. The spring is not strong enough to push the bullets up into the chamber without the nose of the bullet jambing on the feed ramp. Ed is making me up a stronger spring to put in it. I should get it by this Sat. or next Monday. I won't be able to shoot it until the following weekend. So, I have not even got to shoot it yet, but we are getting real close. I will let you know how the recoil is. If I can handle the 2200 ft/sec bullets, the other 60 rounds will be loaded at 2400 ft/sec. Right now I am still playing a waiting game! Ed is being very cooperative in fixing the little quirks so all will go well.

Ken

Thanks for the update.

I look forward to hearing of the results, am I right in thinking you have no brake on the muzzle or is the extra weight in addition to this?

Also do you intend to use the Woodleigh soft nosed bullets at 2400 fps, the expansion shown in the pics from Tom looked awesome at around 2000 - 2100 fps?

Both of those weights are with the 8 ounce muzzle brake on. About 40 rounds of the 2400ft/sec will be full metal jacketed, not soft points. The spring is taking longer than expected. Ed tells me it will still be a couple of weeks. He is having new stronger ones made.

On the 600 O.K., it looks like they are having trouble with the woodleigh softs at the higher speeds of 2200 and 2400 ft/sec. The bullets are basically getting disentegrated at that speed. A new bullet, solid copper is being tested this month. Ed is still having a small problem with the spring follower. Hopefully this will be taken sare of in a couple of more weeks. The first set of new spring followers that came in were too strong, so they are working on something in between. By the way, there is no way I would want to get in an arms race with Tom. We are not in the same financial ballpark. But...I do like alot of the big stuff that he has. He has alot of really nice guns, more power to him. He has also been on alot of very good hunts all over the world. My hat is off to him.

They are not developed yet. Is there is any interest??? If so, I will be glad to post progess pics if I can figure it out. I am NOT a computer genious.
