BEST DOUBLE PRACTICE-WHICH LIVE GAME??
      #64859 - 29/10/06 12:46 PM

Just wondering what forum members feel is the best preparation for hunting Buff with Doubles with LIVE game--

Specifically to hit the animals properly and to shoot followup shots by leading them appropriately if they are running at an angle away or 90 degrees to you.

I don't do alot of wildfowl huntiing but I calculate that you must lead a Buff running at 90 dgrees across you at 25 mph about 16 inches.Obviously as the angle changes the lead changes.

Big Pigs?
?Whitetail-(probably too fast)
Feral dogs-(probably too fast)

Any suggestions??

Thanks to all!!

J&R Outfitters in Florida www.buffalohuntingguides.com does water buff hunts in Florida. I've been eyeing them for a year or two but just can't ever seem to get enough money together to go. They have rates starting at $2500 and going up to about 5K on their site. That appears to be inclusive of trophy fees. I saw them on the Outdoor Channel once and they seemed to have some nice animals. Might be worth a call. That would be about the closest to african buff here that I know of. Other than that hogs would be about the next closest but their anatomy is different so shot placement would be different. But it would get field experience with the gun.

I have found running boars to be good practice as if you jit them with they tend to show it and if you don't it's no great loss.

We also practice on Kangaroos - where we can get a farmer with a permit to destroy - and get the driven towards us during the way
so you end up having to shoot them running but hit a roo with a DR calibre and it does down flat.

Any practice on running game is good - the only problem I see is I won't practice on game in quantity - ie deer - only on vermin which leaves pigs, Buff, donkeys, horses etc over here.

Just my HO.

Practice on buffalo for a cape buffalo hunt!

(sorry just posted this on the other "practice" thread as well )

Kangaroos, pigs, goats, horses, donkeys etc are pretty good practice too.

Are you sure those heaps of buffalo aren't victims of a "Mad cow disease" outbreak that you happened to come across? That's more buffalo than most of us can hope to hunt in a lifetime!

I agree with 500! that is what I practice on , walking up jackrabbits , and you don't have to hit them, just get close, and your on target on a Buffalo! When you get where you can hit one out of ten, and break dust close to the others, on running jacks, at under 50 yds, you've got your rifle dawn pat!

Jackrabbits. They are as hard to put down as a buffalo and harder to hit. After jackrabbits, a buffalo will be a cake walk. I'm not joking about being hard to put down either. I've many times seen them hit with everything from a 22 LR to a 455 in a hand gun and all manner of center fire rifles and keep right on running.

Here where I am we have only cotton tails which are less likely to run and very easy to put down. But I hunt them with a 375 H&H. I use a hard cast bullet which just drills a hole through them and doesn't spoil meat.

For what its worth, theres a video, "Boared to death" about hunting wild boars in the US with mostly DRs and other big bore cartridges. They claim its practice for Africa. Its from BIG BORE Productions. They also have a video, "death by Double Rifle", about hunting in Africa all with Doubles.

I haven't seen the "BOARED TO DEATH" video, but I have the "DEATH BY DOUBLE RIFLE", and for anyone who likes double rifles it is a good film!

Stalking wild pigs with your double is very good practice for African buff and elephants.

Groundhogs and other marmots are great for practice. They are wiley as hell and will run in an instant. It's one thing to shoot them from 300-400 yards with a tack-driving bolt actioned varmint rifle, but it's quite something else to stalk within close range and take them with a double rifle. All your skills are honed by this. One wrong move and the little bugger is in his burrow.
