338 imperialwhat can you tell me about this round

Was looking at left handed rifles on GunsAmerica and found this M700 338 Imperial at a reasonable price. Anyone know anything at all about the 338 Imperial cartridge? I may sound stupid, but I am completely unfamiliar with it.

I may be wrong but I think it was the first of the big beltless magnums off the 404 Jeffery case.The case has a longer shoulder than the Remington 338 ultra magnum and although both are beltless they cannot be swapped. The 338 imperial is a great round with more water capacity than a 338 ultramag.Imperial is now ??defunct and brass may be hard to come by. If I recall they had brass quality issues and only a limited number of firings with one shell was possible.You may be able to form brass by necking down a Remington 375 ultra mag.

This round can fire a 250 gr bullet at 3000 fps vs a 338 WM at 2550 fps, impressive. The recoil is of course--noticable.

Hope I haven't confused things.

Was the 338 Imperial part of the development during the trials
which resulted in the 338 Lapua Magnum ?
ie a 250gn bullet at 3000fps or above in 300+ calibre ?

If you want a large 338, get it rechambered or rebarreled
for 338 Lapua Magnum.

Unknown. The 338 Lapua was developed by the Fins exclusively as a long range sniper round due to deficiencies
of the 308/300WM and the logistical problems of the 50.
It was based on a beltless version of the 416 Rigby and not from any version of the Jeffery. Its goal was an accurate 250+grain bullet at high velocity to whack 'em at up to 3000 fps.They accomplished that.To my knowledge there is no relationship between them.

The accuracy of the 338 Lapua comes from the same principle as the 308.,a wider shorter column of powder to burn.It only makes a practical difference past a quarter of a mile, but if you are a sniper shooting a boattail bullet, thats signifigant.

The original requirement of the 338 Lapue (or what they were looking for) was to be able to shoot through the window of a plane (ie 747) and hit AND kill a terrorist. That's why the 300 Win Mag didn't get up as it couldn't do it.

I'll check but the 338 Imperial may be one of the US Seal developments as I know they were working on / using some more of 404 Case for something.

Case capacity .338Imperial: 112grains. .338Lapua: 115grains. Case diameter for .338Imperial: .544", for .338Lapua: .587".

I think you'll have a time coming up with 338 Imperial brass, especially long-term, and I'd pass on that rifle because of that one issue.

It's tough to really beat the 338 Win. Mag., all things considered. I don't have any trouble exceeding 2700 fps. with 250s in my pair of 338 Win. rifles, and I get 2850 fps. out of 225s. Quite honestly, I don't think you need more speed, and it you can't efficiently hit and kill whatever you're hunting with a 338 Win. Mag., you're not going to do it with anything else, either.........

The Imperial family of cartridges came from Canadian Aubrey White, Cartridges can be made from 404 Jeffery brass.

The Ultra mags kind of killed that line of 404 based wild cats, at least put a damper on them.

The Imperial line was current, based in or near Osoyoos, B.C. in the mid 1980's. Aubrey White, one of the owners/co-inventors was a most likeable chap and an excellent rifle shot himself. We shot together at the World Police and Fire Games in Coquitlam, B.C. in 1985 or 86, I think it was. Great guy.
