Cheekpieces, Do We Really Need Them?

A cheekpiece on a big game rifle can sure look nice, but do they really perform a necessary function?

If you went through you rifles and picked out the one which fits you best and that you shoot the best, does this rifle have cheekpiece?

For me, its a Jeffery .400 BLE WITHOUT a cheekpiece, but I sure wish it had one. I love 'em!

Better qualify that: I love shadow-line pancake cheek-pieces. Personal hates: saddle-bag style cheek-pieces, and those which taper into the comb at the front. Yeetch!

I'm with Marrakai. An English style pancake with a shadowline is for me. I think that a well designed cheekpiece makes the fit better as it tilts the head a bit to help line up the sights.

I hate those big rollover types. I don't know if they work because I refuse to touch one as I am afraid I will be infected by Elephantaitis like they are.

The one that fits me the best is my .400 and it has a pancake beaded cheekpiece. I like the function and the appearance. The American Classic style, which tapers into the comb, gives me the vapors.

I have the lot of them though on bolts

My Parker Hale is a full Monte Carlo monstrosity. Monte Carlo comb, rollover, "saddle bags" the lot. I liked it at the time.

My Whitworth is the classic Americanised English stock with pancake, sfhadow line etc.

My Remington is a plain jane with no cheek piece. Same for the BLR.

The Jeffrey is a plane jane without.

The Jeffrey is the best fitting by far but I still like a thin cheekpice with shadowline for looks.

I like them, they may not be necessary but they dress up a stock I think. I have an Anshutz .222 with a roll over comb, I quite like that as well.

Yes, I definately like shadowline cheekpieces and they do look right especially on big bore rifles.
That said, the only rifle I own that fits me "perfectly" does not have a cheekpiece and I sure don't intend to change that!
