I have always found the Ruger No1 to be a very attractive and well proportioned rifle. I find the 357Mag a great little round for plinking and small game (up to the size of roo and goats) so have decided to combine the two and have made a Rook rifle (for want of a better term) I am planning on making a scaled down version of the tropical, with express sights, barrel band, steel buttplate, nice Turkish or similar walnut etc. I won't be scoping it. I am unfamiliar with the No1 action and am wanting to know a couple of things. Is the action/extraction system suitable for small rimmed cases like the 357mag? Also does the action come in various sizes (I don't recall that it does) and if so what size is best suited to 357mag? Thanks for any advise, comments etc.

The Ruger #1 comes only in one size.
Ruger made a run of the 1A in .357 Mag about 20 years ago. It was a dandy little rifle. I would have bought one, except that I had a Stevens Mod. 44 1/2 chambered in .357 Mag. at that time. The .357 is quite useful in a short, handy rifle.

I'd prefer a #1A in .357 Maximum just to have the longer case for black powder loads, more fitting (for me) for a 'modern' hammerless Rook rifle. ; This would indeed by a nice little gun, with the option of heavy smokeless powder loads for larger game. ; A .40/50 Sharps chambering, straigth or bottle necked would also make a nice #1. ; The Ruger #1 action is quite suitable for any rimless or rimmed round likely to be barreled up in one.

Thanks for the reply. It would be nice to find an original Ruger in 357mag. I don't ever recall seeing them in Australia; perhaps they only were released in the US. Cheers

Thanks for the reply. I thought of the 357mag as it gives the option of using 38spec as well. I'm starting to realise that all the nice little extras I want are going to add up real fast. I might have to simpify/cut back a little or make it a long term project. Cheers
