South Africa 2006 - "Lemberg" & "Sunshine"
      #63773 - 10/10/06 12:29 AM

While travelling in South Africa last month my wife and I arranged to stay at the thatched rondavel of our own member on NE.com, "Sunshine", at his vineyard and winery at Tulbagh near Cape Town.

I know he is eager to see some of the photographs so here they are.

***

Klaus "Sunshine" Schindler, Professional Hunter and Winemaker.

Klaus is sitting in his tasting room at his winery. As can be seen in the photograph, Klaus is also a proud owner of a Krieghoff Big Five Double rifle in 9.3x74R.

Another couple of views of the tasting room.

Bushman or San bows and arrows on the wall, a kudu trophy and Klaus's PH certificate. A good match of wine and hunting enthusiasm.

Klaus made us a gift of a bottle of wine. Thanks Klaus. We enjoyed the bottle at Addo Elephant Park later on.

"Lemberg" Winery and Vineyard

The winery building from the driveway. Once per Klaus's website, the smallest winery in South Africa, now the second smallest. However wine is made on site, and not by another maker.

Inside the main cellar of the winery.

The obligatory winery dog!

Klaus what was his name again?

The Thatched Rondavel at Lemberg

Nice, cosy and private accomodation at the vineyard. Just the one cottage.

The town of Tulbagh is not far off which is a famous Cape town for its authentic old Cape buildings.

A pond is situated behind the cottage with a swimming jetty. Not for us Antipodeans in an early and cool South African spring but it might temp European visitors.

The Tulbagh area is surrounded by majestic mountains on three sides with the valley extending to the South. Lemberg is right along the route from the pass through the mountains to the town of Tulbagh. Baboon can be seen in the pass, as well as other game if one is lucky.

Inside the rondavel

A view of the sitting room. The rondavel has two main rooms, a sitting room with a single bed, a double bebroom, and a kitchette and ensuite bathroom. (Please ignore our junk on the bed!)

A couple more views of the sitting room.

The double bedroom with mosquito net.

A small but useful kitchenette.

And best of all, above it all, the beauty of a thatched roof.

A perfect place to spend a while before or after a hunting safari with one's family or friends, while enjoying the Cape, its wines, food and scenic locations.

***

I particular like these thatched cottages. A dream of mine is to build one (or more) myself one day at home in the Barossa Valley. I particularly liked this example as Klaus has built it not in the usual circle, but two half circles, the rear circle being considerably larger so as to fit the kitchenette and bathroom in the extra "portion" of the larger circle on each side.

Therefore I take a lot of photos of these sorts of buildings and thought I would share a few with you.

"Schindler's Africa

Klaus may soon be trading under a new name of "Schindler's Africa" for wine and safaris in the future.

Good luck to Klaus and thanks for the hospitality.

Is this the Aussie way of saying you are all sissies and don't want to get your TuTus cold?

Nice pictures and I really like the African architecture also. I have some nice pictures of some neat rondavals in Kruger Park also. Thatched roofs are not very common around here.

With all the winemakers on this site we should put together a Nitro gift basket and auction it off to help pay John for his trouble. I will contribute some homemade Apple
Brandy. USDA unapproved of course.

Great pictures John. And it looks like a very pleasant place to stay when in the Cape Town area.

I too have enjoyed studying how various thatched roofs are made. If you decide to not build a big rondavel at home, you might consider a small opensided thatched hut to sit under if it rains when having a braai with some of your homemade boerewors. Just to get a bit of the African feeling while at home.

Here's a small and simpley made thatched roof from southern Tanzania:
