Rains swell drought-stricken northern SA rivers

Rivers are running in South Australia's far-north western corner for the first time in two years.

The Weather Bureau says more than 90 millimetres of rain has fallen at Ernabella on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara lands over the past two days.

Locals say the massive downpour started on Christmas Day and has continued since.

Weather Bureau senior forecaster Phil Davill says the rainfall is the aftermath of ex-tropical cyclone Debbie.

"Over the last couple of days there's been some very heavy rainfall," he said.

"To give you some idea - Ernabella has had a total around about 93 millimetres to date and just across the border [at] the Giles weather station they've had even more up around the 125 millimetres over the last few days."

Mr Davill says it is typical summer weather for the region but the downpours have been heavier than usual.

"The rainfall that they get up that way - the heavier rainfall, tends to be around this time year into January and February, as a result of normally tropical lows drifting south bringing quite significant amounts of moisture," he said.
