Revellers mark year's end collecting pigs and pussies

Party revellers at Pine Creek over 200 kilometres south of Darwin in the Northern Territory celebrated the new year in conjunction with end of the annual "Pig and Pussy Hunt".

Heavy rain greeted the seven-day event, which saw 42 nominees team up to hunt feral cats and pigs, with the aim of catching the biggest animal.

Sixty-seven pigs were weighed in, while a number of smaller ones were left behind.

Organiser Rod Haines says the top pig weight this year was 108 kilograms, 11 below the event record.

"Now 730 kilos of pork was brought in from the other side of Katherine in one hit, that's roughly around 22 pigs," he said.

A handful of cats were also caught.

One of the reasons for the hunt is to combat feral animal numbers, although organisers concede cane toads are now the biggest environmental pest.

Over 300 toads were collected and euthanised as part of the Pig and Pussy Hunt.

So ,the toads were "euthanised" were they. were they euthanised in the usual way, with a golf club or what???
I used to live in Pine Creek ,it would be good to go for a visit at the next pig and pussy hunt.

I know you are all dealing with a non-native species, but here, toads are worth their weight in gold for the insects they consume.

I love toads!!!!
