Old 12g rounds....what can be done?
      #63197 - 29/09/06 08:45 AM

I am eyeing up an old cape gun, and the thing is she has that odd calibre between 21/2 and 23/4 as her chamber, yet is now nitro proofed. What can be done? do i get a smith to bring her up or down in chamber size? down seems impossible.....i think its a 29/16 chamber though.

Any ideas guys?

Have posted this on general too.....

Ben

Make a chamber cast and cut your cases accordingly.

There is an alloy casting material called cerrosafe. It can be bought at Midway or Bownells here in the US. It goes to liquid form at a very low temperature using a double boiler. You then stop the barrel up, in your case just passed the chamber and pour in the liquid cerrosafe in a few minutes it hardens and you can gently knock it free from your gun. You now have a perfect casting of your chamber to measure and trim your cases or send to someone to make brass casings for your gun.

Thankyou Gatsby...

So you would recommend shortening to 2 1/2" chambers?

Gun would be for pigs, principally. second barrel is 577/450 martini.

Thanks

Ben

Adapt the cases to the gun. 2.5 should work fine. Have you looked at the Greg Martin auction site? Mr Lake who catalouges guns for them gives very accurate descriptions.

Am I silly? Can't you just shoot 2 1/2 inch shotgun shells in a larger chamber? eg isn't it possible to shoot 2 1/2" shells in a 2 3/4" chamber as well?

Thanks guys.

She's nitro proofed shotty alright, with a bp proof rifle. its a cape.

Shotgun barrel is described as being between 21/2 and 23/4....re proof if you ask me. so would bp rounds be wiser? very slight pitting towards middle of barrel, and breach end of barrel.

Rifle barrel has misty/dirty look to it,but neither have been cleaned yet.

Thanks all

Ben

Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done. You should send it to me so that it can be properly disposed of.

Seriously, I would get a chamber cast to see what the shell length woud be just to be sure you aren't putting a shell in that's longer than the chamber. You can most certainly shoot the shorter shells in it with no problem. I shoot 2-3/4 loads in a 3 inch chamber all the time and have for years. It's really a very common practice. In fact I rarely shoot 3" loads.

Whatever you do DON'T ALTER THE GUN! You will ruin it as far as it's collectability. You will NEVER recoup your investment should you ever decide to sell it.

Absolutely, you can always shoot a shorter shotshell ctg. in a longer chamber when dealing with shotguns. Some of the older guns are difficult to measure, as they merely tapered the chamber into the forcing cone, rathe rthan having a 'proper' chamber. The transition from paper to brass also make chamber sizing difficult to measure. The 'case' must be kept short enough so that the folded crimp section(paper or plastic), when opened, doesn't make the ball fit too tightly in the chamber. - ie: the case must not protrude into the tapered cone section of the barrel, ahead of the chamber itself.

Guys,thankyou........

Bad news, law forbids me to get it as calibre isnt registered here.

So,moving swiftly onwards.....maybe one of you would like it? Better one of us than just another salesroom etc.....plus we use our guns anyway.

By the worry sorry,i too have always used 23/4 in 3" chambers etc too.....even 21/2 in 3" chambered marlin goosegun(superb gun)

Thanks anyway, and hope one of you like the gun as much as i do!
